Richard James Lunsford III, 57, passed away Wednesday, August 26, 2020, at his home.

Mr. Lunsford was born March 29, 1963, in Asheville, to Shelby Jean Jones Lunsford and Richard James Lunsford II.

Richard attended Erwin High School and worked as a Instrument Technician. As a talented musician, singer, and songwriter, he belonged to several Contemporary Christian bands: Signet, Alpha and Omega, and the Already Free Band. His love of music followed him throughout his journey, and he recently rediscovered his relationship to music. Rick was known for his desire to help those he loved and felt most at peace and connected when he was loving his daughter and family through service and acts of kindness. Service was his love language. All those who were touched by Rick’s love and kindness hold these memories close to their hearts.

He is survived by his daughter, Amista Lemke; three grandchildren, Aviana, Louisa, and Joelle; wife, Susan Lunsford; sister, Patti Cassida; brother, Kevin Lunsford; stepchildren Blake, Hannah, Lily and step grandchildren Cade, Kai and Rose

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I have fond memories of hanging out with Ricky at Richard and Maggie’s. We played the guitar and sang, Maggie would cook hamburgers, Richard would sleep on the porch, Betty Sue would wash her heavy chevy. Times were much simpler back then. We will miss you Ricky! We’ll be praying for the family. Lean on God, because he will never let you down!

  2. I deeply grieve with the Lunsford family on Rick’s passing. We shared a history full of wonderful memories around holidays, vacations, and Amista’s childhood. Rick was one of the most gifted, talented, and caring people I’ve ever known. My late mother said that Rick, who wrote such inspirational songs about Christ, had a beautiful heart touched by God. Please accept our deepest sympathies. Our prayers are with you during this time.

  3. So sorry for the family’s loss. I went to Erwin with Ricky and remember him as a real gentleman. He will be missed.

  4. I just found out yesterday that Rick passed away last year. I pray that he is at peace in heaven with Jesus and playing guitar with a band of angels.
