Alvin "Al" Leroy Gass

Alvin (Al) Leroy Gass, of Fletcher, NC, passed away on January 17, 2021. Al was born in Danville, PA on June 20, 1939 to Leroy and Evelyn Gass. He lived in Irish Valley and Shamokin, PA until his marriage to Marian Bingaman in 1966. Al is survived by his wife; daughter Debbi and husband Eric of Hillsborough, NC; and son David and wife Leigh of Santa Clara, CA; and his three granddaughters, Rachel, Sarah, and Nola.

Al started his education in a one-room schoolhouse and later graduated from Shamokin Area High School. He attended preparatory school at Wyoming Seminary and then proudly served in the US Army from 1959-1962. He was a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge #255 in Shamokin. Al earned a BA in Accounting from Husson College and worked as a controller for GTE and Nypro. He was a pioneer in adopting technology in the workplace and this spilled over to his family by having the latest computers at home in the early 1980s.

Al grew up on a farm in rural Pennsylvania and loved the outdoors! He was an avid fisherman and hunter and further developed his outdoor skills through scouting. He supported his son and daughter extensively in scouts, including their achievement of the highest levels of Eagle Scout and The Gold Award, and held leadership positions in The Boy Scouts of America and Girl Scouts of the USA. Al was always there to provide scout troops with guidance, humor, and encouragement during countless camping trips throughout the Carolinas. When not scouting, Al’s passion for fishing took him to the nearby Lake Julian or Lake Hartwell where he spent many weekends with his family to fish, water ski, cook on the campfire, and just have a good time!

Al had a lifelong desire to learn and enjoyed reading, traveling, the arts, cooking, and listening to the perspectives of others. He read many different types of books about history, culture, and religion as well as fiction for leisure. He was an active member of Skyland United Methodist Church for over 40 years.

Al studied the Bible thoroughly and enjoyed sharing his knowledge of its concepts and teachings with others, as well as expanding his own understanding through interactions with his family, friends, and by participating or, many times, leading study groups. Al was known as being both steadfast and open-minded. This was evident in how he changed his views over the years and questioned long-standing traditions given his constant search for the truth, which is rooted in his trust and faith in God who loves all people equally.

A private memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be mailed to Skyland UMC, PO Box 697, Skyland, NC 28776 and specify in memory of Al; or Girl Scouts of the USA, https://www.girlscouts.org/en/adults/donate/donate.html and specify in the applicable fields in memorial for Al Gass and with notification sent to David Gass at dagc3a@gmail.com.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Al has been a friend of our family for many years at Skyland Methodist Church and in the Scouting programs. He was a good man and we will truly miss him and his wonderful outlook on life.

  2. Dear Marian and family,
Al and Marian have been friends for over 40 years so this loss is so personal to me and our family at Skyland United Methodist Church.
One of my best memories of Al was his commitment to God, church. and family. I will miss his humor and honesty. I am sad and will miss Al. Heaven’s gain is our loss….

  3. I had the blessing of having some of those long conversations with Al about our faith in God and how we live out our lives as Christians. He was a dear friend and I will certainly miss him. So grateful to have known this special man.

  4. David – our hearts and prayers go out to you and your family at this time and in the days ahead.

  5. I have so many fond memories of Al from my time in Girl Scouts. He and Miriam gave so unselfishly to all of us through the years. I loved all of the backpacking, camping, canoeing, and other adventures that he and Miriam took us on. I am forever grateful for how he poured into our lives. I am praying that the Lord will bless and comfort you all during this difficult time.

  6. Dearest Marian,
I just saw that you had lost Al this week. I am so sorry for your loss of this wonderful man. You were both such a great team and have such a wonderful family. Please know you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers during this most difficult time. Sending love to you and hugs from afar! I know you will always hold Al in your heart and he will always bring wonderful memories and a smile to your face remembering your many wonderful years spent together.

  7. Marian, Betty and I are saddened to hear Al has passed. He was a great partner when we kept GTE straight in Warren, Pa. years ago. I remember our charter flights for ops and budget presentations. Al was always prepared and was a consumate professional. On a personal level Al always talked about his family. He was so proud of his kids., David and Debbie. It has been awhile since we have communicated, but Al was always been part of my life experience. Our prayers are for you and your family’s peace and solace. God bless. Scott and Betty White

    • Thank you so much for your kind words about Dad. They are a great comfort to me and our family. It was wonderful to hear your memories of Dad and learn more about him at GTE. We appreciate your prayers so much.

  8. I worked with Al at Nypro for approximately 10 years. He was a great worker, positive person but mostly just a great human being. I am so sorry to hear of his passing but I know his love of Christ will put him in a better place. He was a good friend but even better human being. God is lucky to have him join him forever.

    • Thank you so much for your kind words and memories of Dad. It is very comforting to me and my family to read them. It is neat to hear more about how he was professionally, which I did not know as much as his daughter. Thank you so much.

  9. Marian,
I am so sad to hear of your Al’s passing. I want you to know that I am thinking of you and your family. I am keeping you close in heart and prayer. Blessings to all.
