John “Jack” Bernard Peterson, 91, of Fletcher, NC died unexpectedly Wednesday, February 23, 2022 in his home.

Born in Rockford, IL, he was the husband of the late Barbara Ann (Bourkland) Peterson, and the son of the late Hilmer and Irene Rebecca (Schenberger) Peterson.

Jack was a 1953 graduate of Beloit College, Beloit, WI.

A US Army veteran, Jack was employed by Sundstrand Machine Tool in Rockford for many years until his retirement.

Jack and Barbara, his wife of 54 years, relocated from Rockford in 1993 to Punta Gorda, FL, to pursue cruising on their sailboat “Good Idea”. In 2006, they moved again to Fletcher, where for many years they volunteered at the Fletcher Library. An accomplished silversmith, Jack also enjoyed making jewelry for his wife.

He is survived by a niece, Kris Chandler and her husband Phil of Knoxville, TN.

Jack donated his body to medical research and at his request, no services will be held.

Kris and Phil wish to thank Patty Marvel, Sonia Pearson, and Beth Graham for the special care and friendship they gave to Jack.

  1. Jack enjoyed traveling on the Semester At Sea Program visiting many ports
    of call and sailing on the Star Clipper. a 4 masted sailing ship in his retirement.
    Friendly, and an accomplished sailor who had an interest in other cultures and history, he will be missed by his sailing friends.
