James Conrad (J.C.) McGee, Jr., 95, of Givens Estates, Asheville, died Friday, April 25, 2025 at his residence.
A lifetime resident of Asheville, he was the son of the late James Conrad McGee, Sr. and Oberia “Molly” Love Hipps McGee and the husband of the late Margaret Hurlocker McGee. He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Constance Rebecca McGee Mabe and one son, Dr. Timothy Conrad McGee.
He is survived by one son, James Walter McGee and his wife, Yvonne, of Greenville, SC; 5 grandchildren, Julie Ann McGee Nix, Stephen James McGee, Huntington Blake McGee, Timothy Christopher McGee, Casey Addison McGee; nine great grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter, Lily; one daughter-in-law, Joan McGee of Lenoir, NC and one son-in-law, Steve Mabe of Walnut Cove, NC.
A graduate of Lee Edwards High School, he received a B.S. Degree in Pharmacy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1951. He was a pharmacist for more than 50 years, owner-operator of Kenilworth Drug Store for almost 40 years.
J.C. worked with the UNC School of Pharmacy for many years, training over 150 students as a pharmacy preceptor in their senior internship program. He was selected state preceptor of the year in 1986. This was an honor that was voted on by the students and faculty of the UNC School of Pharmacy.
He was an active member of Central United Methodist Church for more than 60 years. Being an avid tennis player, he was a member of the Asheville Racquet Club and a former member of the Country Club of Asheville. He was a member of the International Thomas Wolfe Society and a past member of the Board of Directors of the Thomas Wolfe Memorial. He was a member of the UNC Educational Foundation, the NC Pharmaceutical Association, as well as the National Association of Pharmacists.
The family would like to express their thanks to the staff of Givens Estates.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in the Norma Pulliam Chapel of Givens Estates and the family will receive friends following the service. A private graveside will be held at Lewis Memorial Park.
