Fred Allen Millar, 84, of Fletcher NC, died Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at Elizabeth House in Flat Rock. He died peacefully, surrounded by family, after a 6-month battle with lung cancer.
Fred was born in Paris, Illinois July 23, 1940. He was the husband of Marilyn (Roland) Millar of Fletcher, to whom he had been married 59 years. He was the son of the late Lawrence and Betty (Harrison) Millar.
He joined the Marine Corp at age 17 and earned his GED while serving. Fred married Marilyn Roland in 1966 and moved from Dunnellon, Florida to Arden, NC in 1969 and eventually started his own tool and die business in 1980. This business eventually expanded into injection molding and still operates as Millar Industries.
He was a patriotic American and proud supporter of US troops in his private and professional life. Fred’s injection molding business manufactures night vision goggle components and accessories used by the US military.
Fred was the patriarch of a large (and growing) family. His two sons and one daughter fondly remember their father as “a classic 70’s dad. Strict but fair, strong, demanding and determined to instill the value of hard work. Once he became a grandfather he adored and doted on his grandchildren. He spoiled them with love and constant generosity.” His eight grandchildren remember their ‘papa’ as selfless, kindhearted, funny, wise, generous, strong, and successful.
Fred’s passions included working on his classic muscle cars, collecting Ford Mustangs, watching crime dramas, and spending time with his family in NC and Florida. He never missed a chance to show his pride in the USMC and was frequently spotted with a Marine Corp hat when he was out. His children reflected on Fred’s life as being a clear example of the American dream. From humble beginnings he led a meaningful, successful, and impactful life. He was always friendly, kind, and generous to family, friends, and strangers.
In addition to his wife Marilyn, Fred is survived by two sons, Steve Millar and his wife Sharon and Brett Millar and his wife Tracey; a daughter, Leslie Scholfield and her husband TN; eight grandchildren: Christopher Millar and his wife Nina, Chelsea Carpenter and her husband Steven, Kaylee, Shelby, Ayla, Savannah, and Samson Millar, and Freddie Millar Scholfield; and one great grandson, Nathan Millar.
Graveside services will be private, but a public memorial service will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Fred’s memory may be made to the Elizabeth House (via
