Timothy Eugene Reid

timothy reid

Timothy Eugene Reid, 78, of Asheville, NC, passed away on July 19, 2025. A lifelong resident of Asheville, Tim was born on August 13, 1946, to the late Philip and Devisadero Reid. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Barbara Baker Reid.

Tim is survived by his beloved daughter, Melanie Reid Snelson (Brad). Melanie considered Tim the most loving and supportive father every day of her life. He’s survived by cherished grandchildren, Chesney, Savannah, Bradshaw, and True Snelson. He also leaves behind his sisters, Tobey Reid Livingstone (Joe) and Anne Reid Hunt (Peter), who will always remember his humor, kindness, and love for family.

Tim was a lifelong member of the Basilica of St. Lawrence and a devout Christian.

Tim began his career at the Asheville Citizen Times, where he found joy in meeting people and sharing their stories. He later worked as a sales associate at Leicester Flooring, where his warm personality and genuine interest in people continued to shine.

One of Tim’s favorite roles at the newspaper was reviewing plays at the Flat Rock Playhouse. A lifelong lover of theatre, he shared this passion with Barbara, with whom he enjoyed countless performances. For many years, Tim acted with the Montford Park Players in The Christmas Carol, playing the role of Mr. Fezziwig, the life of the party, whom he mirrored in life as the most joyful in the room.

Tim was rarely without a camera in hand. His love for photography was not only a personal passion but also a gift he shared with his family—his creative legacy lives on through them.

While he wore many hats throughout his life, his most treasured role was that of “Papa” to his precious grandchildren, who brought him immeasurable joy. His grandchildren adored him and considered him the light of their lives.

He found happiness in reading, solving crosswords, and playing Scrabble. Other activities Tim enjoyed were attending local craft shows, cooking, and hosting family events.

Tim had a keen mind and was someone that could discuss any current issue. He was well-spoken and read. He was always learning and interested in the world around him.

Tim’s education began at Gibbons Hall, followed by Georgia Military Academy and Georgetown University.

Tim’s zest for life, love of storytelling, and devotion to family and friends will forever be remembered by those who knew and loved him.

Services will be conducted by Monsignor Roger Arnsparger on Thursday, July 24, at 3:00 p.m. in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Green Hills Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I’m praying for your family, Melanie. Your dear father leaves us with warm memories and gratitude for his dedication to the Reid family. We always looked foreword to seeing him and Barbara at the Reid reunions in Missouri. They will be missed.

  2. I am deeply saddened by Tim’s passing. For many years, we lunched together periodically and discussed variety of topics. including Tim’s play reviews, acting, and world affairs. I fondly recall his perceptiveness, sense of humor, and delightful personality. Now, I feel that I have lost a friend. I send my deepest sympathy to the family as you face this difficult time. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

  3. Remembering Tim from his journalistic career and from church. He was a very talented true gentleman whom I always enjoyed chatting with when our paths crossed. I always enjoyed his reviews of the Flat Rock Playhouse, and essentially, any piece he wrote for our local media sources. My thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.

  4. When I think of Tim “love” always comes to mind: the importance he placed on love. Love for his family, whom he cherished more than all else & whose love, returned in kind, was so precious to him. In our Bible fellowship group, his one comment I specifically recall
was ” isn’t it all about love?”. He seemed always to seeking to know & understand the love of God more deeply.
One early morning in the hospital, he asked to pray with me & his prayer was uniquely only about gratitude for all he had been given. He told me he had found peace. He is present today only in my heart & memories, but I look forward to the day when I will see him again, vibrant, well, happy & surrounded by all the wonders & glory God had prepared for him.

  5. I will always remember Tim Reid as a kind and helpful neighbor, C-T colleague and friend. During some of my troubled days and travels, he and Barbara opened their Oakley home to me for overnight stays. In his latter years, I enjoyed his friendly and informative telephone chats.
I know the family will miss him deeply. Good journey, may God bless.
