Woody passed away Wednesday, July 30, 2025, leaving behind a legacy as unique and memorable as the man himself. Known for his love of deer hunting and his impressive collections of oddities, Woody was someone who found joy in the outdoors and pride in the traditions he cherished.
To those who knew him best, Woody was far more than a hunter or a collector—he was a devoted family man with a big heart, a sharp wit, and a talent for telling the corniest jokes at just the right moment. His humor, even at its most groan-worthy, brought laughter and light to any room he entered.
One of Woody’s quiet joys was feeding the local wildlife—squirrels, chipmunks, and the occasional raccoon all knew where to find a generous helping, thanks to him. It was a simple but genuine reflection of his gentle nature and appreciation. The animals knew they had a friend in him.
Woody was the beloved father of Kenny, Donna (Ronnie), Lisa (David), and Marty (Jennifer). Grandfather to Heather (Devin), Brian, Laura, Daniel, Holly, and Morgan. Great grandchildren Stephen (McKayla), Emma, Albert, Hayden, Kayley, Spencer, Joey, and Layla. Great-great granddaughter, Eloise. He was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Louise, with whom he shared a lifetime of love, laughter, and memories. Their bond was one built on deep respect and devotion—he never stopped talking about how much she meant to him. In the last few months he longed to reunite with her.
Woody was a devoted follower of Jesus and lifelong member of Oteen Baptist Church and in later years Brookstone Church.
He lived with a sense of purpose, a deep love for his family, and an unwavering authenticity that made him unforgettable. Woody’s stories, jokes, and the way he made people feel—seen, heard, and loved—will be missed more than words can say.
A Celebration of Woody’s life will be held on Monday, August 4, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Groce Funeral Home Tunnel Road with the visitation following. Reverend James Lamb and Pastor Josh Grant will officiate. Friends and family are invited to gather, share memories, and honor the man who meant so much to so many.
In his memory, tell a joke, feed a critter, or take a walk in the woods—just as Woody would have wanted.
Groce Funeral Home on Tunnel Road is assisting the family.

His friends at The Cove will miss his gentle demeanor and kind spirit! He was a faithful employee to the end.
Woody made me laugh with his pet squirrel stories. He was a dear man, and he will be missed!!
To Donna and the family, my deepest sympathies. I had great memories of our time together at Biltmore High School. We were in the Kiwanis High School Key club together and on select Friday’s we went to men’s Kiwanis meeting in the George Vanderbilt hotel. Good guy.
I will miss sweet Woody. He was my friend and a joy to know and work with. I think of him all bundled up for the cold in his battery heated coat directing traffic in the parking lot. Always with a cold and happy smile. A good man, a lover of God and the many gifts of life and nature that God offers to his children. Rest in peace sweet Woody.
I’m keeping you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.
