Andrew Charles Zichy
May 22, 1949 – August 22, 2025

Andrew “Andy” Zichy, age 76, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 22, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by the love of his devoted wife and son.

Those who knew Andy will forever remember his sharp wit, warm sense of humor, and the countless ways he brightened the lives of others. His quick comebacks and laughter will be cherished memories for family and friends alike.

Andy was born in Hohenems, Austria, on May 22, 1949, to Thomas and Mary Szechenyi Zichy as they fled Hungary during World War II. Together with Mary’s parents and siblings, the family immigrated to America, where they settled in Asheville, NC.  Andy was the oldest of four siblings—fondly referred to as the “A, B, C, & D kids”: Andrew, Bernadette, Charles, and Doris. Their childhood was spent on Dunston Street until their father designed the family’s forever home on Kensington Drive.

Andy graduated from Asheville Catholic High School before attending Western Carolina University. He later married his college sweetheart, Susan Kovalesky, with whom he built a beautiful life and family. After spending their early years in Haw Creek, they moved to Swannanoa, where they raised their three children together.

Andy worked at American Enka for 12 years before discovering his true calling in the grocery business. He spent more than 28 years with BI-LO, where he served as a store manager until his retirement in 2014. Andy was more than just a manager, he was a friend, mentor, and helping hand to so many. Whether offering rides to those without transportation or delivering firewood to families in need during the winter, his kindness and generosity left a lasting impact on his community.

Andy was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Zichy; his mother, Mary Szechenyi Zichy; and his sister-in-law, Beverly Zichy.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Susan; his children, Christy Zichy (Pete Kreycir), Michele Aiken (Dustin), and Michael Zichy (Elizabeth); and his grandchildren, Connor Aiken and Gwendolyn Zichy, who lovingly knew him as “Pop-Pop.”

Andy’s legacy will live on through his laughter, his stories, and the joy he brought to everyone who knew him. He often signed his emails with the phrase “Keep smilin’,” and that is exactly what his family and friends will do as they honor his memory.

The family deeply appreciates the outpouring of love, support, and kindness during this time.

The visitation will be held on Thursday, August 28, 2025, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Groce Funeral Home (856 Tunnel Rd, Asheville, NC).  A Catholic Mass will follow on Friday, August 29, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church (102 Andrews Place, Swannanoa, NC). Inurnment will then take place at Riverside Cemetery.

Following mass, a reception will be held at the Four Points by Sheraton, 22 Woodfin St., Downtown Asheville, from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. Those who wish, may head straight to the reception in lieu of joining the family at the cemetery. The family will join shortly thereafter.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. My sincere heartfelt condolences to Susan, and all in the Zichy family. Andrew, Andy as we knew him was so kind, warm to be around and loved by all who knew him. He was a great guy, dear friend and was always fun to be around him and Susan. We shared many times dancing and hanging out, he will be truly missed and never forgotten. RIP my friend Andy 🙏🏽 I will be holding Susan and the Zichy family up in the light. My prayers for all of them with grace , peace and understanding and God’s care!

  2. I remember playing little league baseball with Zichy at the old Biltmore School ball field. He was a pretty good pitcher. Sad to hear of his passing.

  3. Mrs. Zichy and Michael, I’m so very sorry for your loss. Mr. Zichy was always so kind to all of us growing up. Your family will be in my prayers.

    • I have thought often of “Andy.” I met and became friends with Andy while attending UNCA. We became good friends along with other members of the “Catholic mafia;,”
That group of students who attended Catholic school before college, I was a Presbyterian hanging out with all these guys. He was a great friend, funny, smart, a provider of great support and advice during a tough time for me. A great guy. God bless you Andy.

  4. I was so sad to hear of Andy’s passing. Lifting the Zichy family up in prayer and hoping you’ll be comforted by the lifetime of beautiful memories you made with a great husband and father. Peace be with you all.

  5. Andy, always the best, through all the years of Asheville Catholic, and as alter boy’s at the Basilica of St. Lawrence.
May God bless your family at this time; but, they must know their loss is Heaven’s gain.
    Love to All,
    David Wright

  6. As a teenager working at BI-LOs 88-91 Andy was my favorite manager and a good man, many good stories and memories with him. Sorry for his loss.

  7. November 1998, God brought us together at Bi-lo 19 Black Mountain. From day one you weren’t just my right hand – you were my friend ,my second family. For over 20 years , we were blessed with not just great teammates but some great customers,We shared so much of our lives about our families. Your Dad and Mom shopping the stores. The values they taught you only made your family special. Susan , the beautiful love of your life, and Christy, Michelle , and Michael. How proud when you spoke of them and looked how great and accomplished they all have become. Finally, you made it to being a Pop -Pop to your precious grandkids. All your family are apart of you and there’s a trait through you we will always see in them. I will truly miss you my friend. I will keep smilin remembering the drummer who listened to Chicago, who enjoyed the newest technology, and last the frugal spender who made sure those fries at McDonalds were always fresh and hot ! Till we meet again …

  8. I didn’t know Andy well but Susan and I were classmates back here in Ohio. She is a special person and Andy was fortunate to have her as his wife and partner. I’m thinking of you, Susan, during this difficult time.

  9. Just found out now about Andy’s passing. I knew him back in the 1960’s when we attended Asheville Catholic together our senior year. We were friends then and it carried over to our adulthood as I use to visit him many times just to say hello at the Black Mountain Bi-Lo. He was a most decent person who always managed to spend some “catch up” time with me. I knew his wife Susan from Belk, where she worked with my daughter. What a great couple she and Andy made. What a contributor to life he was if one just took even a brief look at his history. Andy was “Everyman” and truly made a positive difference in so many lives. Enjoy your place in heaven Andy and it will be so nice to once again “catch up” with you.
