Madie “Ellen” Anders Sampson, 77, lost her battle with breast cancer on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at Swannanoa Valley Health & Rehabilitation.
An Asheville native, Ellen was the daughter of the late Glenn and Mildred Farnsworth Anders. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Howard James Sampson, who died in 2024; and brothers, Steve Anders and Alan Anders.
Amongst her many hobbies and interests, Mrs. Sampson loved crocheting, watching Western movies, traveling, especially to Florida, and spending time with her family.
Mrs. Sampson is survived by her daughters, Janet Littrell (Jeff) and Madie Melton (Bryant); grandsons, Jeremy Littrell, Kevin Melton and Scott Melton; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friend, Ginger Whitted, who was like a sister to Ellen.
Her family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, October 6, at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. The funeral service will take place the following morning on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery Chapel, Black Mountain.

We were deeply saddened to hear about Ellen’s passing. We cherish the many wonderful memories we shared with her, and I am grateful for the warmth and kindness she brought into all of our lives. Our condolences to you during the Loss of Ellen. I had met her at Lowe’s. My sister & brother-in-law had gone to school with Howard & both were acquainted with Ellen. Cherish your memories. Again our sympathy.
I am so sorry to hear about Ellen. She excited such a sweet lady. Loved to hear her laugh. At one time I lived on Mulberry St. She will be missed. Prayers for you and your families 🙏
