Myra Elizabeth “Betty” Young Matthews, 94, passed away at Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Center on Wednesday, October 22, 2025.

She was a woman of great faith, wisdom, and endless love and appreciation for everyone she met. She attended Mars Hill Junior College, and received a Bachelor’s Degree from Appalachian State University and a Master’s Degree from UNC-Chapel Hill. She was a devoted educator and guidance counselor for over 30 years in the public school system. She was a member of the former Emma Methodist Church for much of her life.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jack Matthews, her parents, Lillian Gibbs Young and Zenas Young, her brother, Bob Young, and many other loved ones. As important was their beloved dogs over the years, Cherrie, Beau Beau Cousteau, Molly, DeeDee, Candy, and Minnie.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Pat Young of Brevard, NC, several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and extended family members, and many lifelong friends.

Graveside services will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 1 Chapel Faith Drive, Candler, NC, on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. Anyone is welcome to attend.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Deerfield Charity Foundation, Residents Assistance Fund, 1617 Hendersonville Road, Asheville, NC 28803, or the charity of one’s choice.

  1. Betty was like a mother to me. Treated me like I was her own. My brother Dave too. I could never in a million years express the gratitude and love I feel. She made such a difference in my life and I thank God for her. I can’t wait to see her again.

  2. Aunt Betty was actually my idea of an angel this side of heaven. Now she has been united with Jesus and Uncle Jack. Well done good and faithful servant.
