Dora Dean (Thomas) Slayton

Dora Dean Thomas Slayton, 76, went to be with her Savior on Friday, November 28, 2025, at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, North Carolina.

Dora was preceded in death by the love of her life of 54 years, Carl L. Slayton Sr. and both of her parents Dwight D. Thomas and Mary C. Thomas.

Dora is survived by her three children; Carl L. Slayton Jr. and wife Rachael of South Carolina, Karen Slayton Benfield and husband Jerry of Horse Shoe, NC and Kendra Slayton Green and husband Daniel of Leceister, NC. She has four grandchildren: Katie Kay Slayton of Winchester, VA, Kelsey Marie Slayton of Winchester, VA, Carlee Benfield Hopkin and husband Russell of Fletcher, NC, Siri Ava Green of Leceister, NC as well as four great grandchildren. She is also survived by four of her six siblings: Wayne Thomas of Newport News, VA, David Thomas and wife Ann of Yorktown, VA, Kathy Proper and husband Richard of Newport News, VA, and Sarah Richards of Georgia.

Dora and Carl shared a beautiful life together raising their three children. Dora was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker, and friend. Her creative soul and witty, youthful, and fun-loving spirit will be missed by the many who loved her so dearly.

Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian (72 Long Shoals Road Arden, NC 28704) is presiding over all service arrangements. A private Graveside Service will be held for immediate family only.

In lieu of any flowers, the family requests that you please make a donation, in Dora’s honor, to the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, NC – a Godly, peace filled place to wish loved ones farewell.
