Paul Howard Austin, 58, of 30 Meta’s Lane, Candler, went to be with the Lord Saturday, February 22, 2003, in an Asheville hospital. Mr. Austin was a lifelong resident of Buncombe County and was a son of the late Albert Furman and Meta Iowa Ingle Austin. He was a graduate of Enka High School and retired after 20 years with the Upper Hominy Voluntary Fire Department. He formerly worked with the Draper Corporation, the Research Department of American Enka, the NC Department of Corrections, and at the time of his death was employed as agriculture Director of First Step Farm for eighteen years. He was a member of White Rock Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Doris Jean Campbell Austin; two sons, Charles Eugene Austin and his wife Chandra of Candler and James Albert Austin, Annie and Zachary of Candler; one special granddaughter, Papaw’s little angel, Hannah Nicole Austin; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Wilma and Don Miller of Candler, Mary and Jim Roberts of Weaverville, Alberta Watts and John, Kathleen and Jerry Fish, and Doris and Jerry Revis all of Candler; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Don and Vivian Austin of Asheville, Joe and Linda Austin of Candler, and George and Gail Austin of Marshall. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Monday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Revs. Bill Plemmons, Don Austin and Greg Metcalf officiating. Burial will be at Pisgah United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 - 8:30 pm Sunday at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted with appreciation or memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 120 Executive Park, Bldg, 1, Asheville, NC 28801.

    Paul was the BEST. We will miss him so much. The Horn Hill Hunting will never be the same.Ever day was a pleasure to be with Paul and Doris.I wish I had more time to have gotten to know you both better and longer. The years that we did have together will be always in my heart.Paul could take a bad day and turn it into a funny one.All the tails he would tell about himself when he was young was so funny.Thank you Doris for sharing him with all .My family as truly lost a great friend.We love you Doris AND WE WILL BE THERE FOR YOU.     I’m so sorry I will miss Paul.And I wish he could have seen my baby girl Josie.But she will know of him just as he knew of her.Hunting will never be the same with out Paul there making a kill when NO one else could.Here you and Zack and Paul would come in with a deer evertime.He had the gift.Doris call on me anytime and go hunting with us anytime you want to I’ll come and get you.

    I was so sorry to hear about Paul’s death. He was a high school and life-long friend of mine. He will be missed. I’m sorry I won’t be able to attend the funeral because I work in Anderson, SC. May God bless you all.
