Spencer Dale Payne, 73, of 76 Montview Dr., Asheville, died Wednesday, October 25, 2006, St. Joseph’s Campus Mission Hospitals. Mr. Payne was born in Madison County and was a son of the late Nathan and Violet Moore Payne. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Alice Farris, Lois Barger, and Luetta Etherton. Mr. Payne was retired from the US Navy after 20 years of service and was also a merchant marine. He retired from the VA Medical Center. He attended Basilica of St. Lawrence, D.M. and Big Sandy United Methodist Church. Mr. Payne was loved by many and was extremely family oriented. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. He is survived by his wife, Milagros Lopez Payne; two daughters, Lena Martin and husband Pat, of Murphy, and Sheila Plemmons and husband Brian, of Asheville; two sons, Antonio Sanchez and wife Loli, and Agustin Sanchez, all of Asheville; three sisters, Lillian Wells and Lena Lundy, both of Leicester, and Mae Suttles, of Swannanoa; brother, Ronnie Payne, of Arkansas; and seven grandchildren, Daniel, Elizabeth, and Steven Sanchez, Kathryn and Heather Plemmons, and Carmen and Bella Martin. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. with the Rev. Ed Worley officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. His family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

  1. I have lost one the dearest uncle’s one could every have. I will always remember the good times we had. He was very special to me and I loved him like a brother. My comfort is that we will be together again one day.

  2. HEY SHEILA, SO SORRY TO HEAR OF THE LOSS THAT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY EXPERIENCED. I KNOW THE PAIN OF LOSING A PARENT, THE ONLY THING IS, IT WAS MY MOM. I PRAY THAT GOD WILL GIVE YOU ALL THE STRENGTH TO GET THROUGH THIS. IT WILL BE HARD, AND ITS OK TO TO BE ANGRY, JUST TRY TO KEEP THE THOUGHT THAT YOU KNOW WHERE HE IS AND THAT SOME DAY, YOU WILL BE WITH HIM AGAIN.

    I MISS YOU. I REMEMBER THE GOOD OL DAYS IN THE SNACK SHOP…I GREW TO THINK A LOT OF YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. I LOVE YOU GUYS…HANG IN THERE AND KEEP YOUR HEAD UP.
