Asheville – Zachary Taylor Ledbetter, 89, of 4102 Dominic Lane, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, January 17, 2007, after a period of declining health. He was a native of Buncombe County and was the son of the late Richard Johnson and Etta Ingram Ledbetter of Ledbetter Road in the Avery’s Creek Community. He also was preceded in death by four sisters, Zaida Ledbetter, Ann L. Young, Norma L. Dillingham and Gladys L. Todd; a brother, Grady G. Ledbetter and two previous wives, Lorraine Raney Ledbetter and Katherine Jarrett Ledbetter. Zack graduated from Valley Springs High School and Blanton’s Business College. He was employed with the Southern Bell Telephone Company with a 40 year career, interrupted by four years in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he served in the Pacific Theatre. He was assigned to the 77th Infantry Division Signal Company and participated in two major Island invasions, including the liberation of the Philippines. Zack was a charter member of the Valley Springs Lions Club, the Skyland Fire Department and a member of Calvary Episcopal Church since 1946. He was a dedicated and active Republican, as a precinct chairman, for many years. Surviving are his wife, Margaret H. Ledbetter and son, Jeffrey Taylor Ledbetter, of Asheville; one step-daughter, Deanne Shuford of Asheville and one step-son, Robin Greene of Baltimore, Maryland; brothers, William R. Ledbetter, and wife Ruby, of Fletcher, Jesse I. Ledbetter, and wife Marie, of Asheville and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon Saturday at Calvary Episcopal Church officiated by the Rev. Victor Mansfield. Interment will follow in the Calvary Churchyard. Military rites will be conducted by the Henderson County Honor Guard. His family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service in the Old Well Hall at the church. Memorials may be made to the Calvary Episcopal Church Window Fund, P.O. Box 187, Fletcher, NC 28732.

    He was always a kind considerate friend who always had a lovely smile and a positive attitude.

  5. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. It was a great pleasure to have known Zack. We never saw him without a smile on his face and was a kind man. He never had a bad word to say about anyone. He will be surely missed.

  6. When I joined Southern Bell in 1962, right out of the USAF and a Tech School, Zack was about the only person who would show me the ropes. He remained the same kind and pleasant person these last 45 years and I will miss him…..

  7. Psalm 23. Zach was a pillar of our club and his many years of dedicated service set a high standard for all of us. His many years as Treasurer contributed significantly to the effectiveness of our club. We missed him at our meetings these past few months and now we will all miss him.
