Arden ~ Richard L. Penland of Sherwood Forest Drive, Arden, died on February 28, 2007 at Mountain Area Hospice Solace Center. He was born in Buncombe County and was the son of the late Ralph and Gussie Payne Penland and was preceded in death by six brothers and one sister. He worked many years for Buckner Transfer, Cope Trucking and retired from Carolina Freight. He was a member of the Teamsters Union and a member for 32 years of the Arden First Baptist Church, where he served as an usher and was active in the church. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Elizabeth Hensley Penland of Arden; two daughters, Linda Andrews and husband Trip of Duluth, GA and Teresa Medera and husband Frank of Jackson, NJ; three sons, Michael Penland of Fletcher, Steve Penland and wife Sheila of Hendersonville and Jeff Penland and wife Carol of Ocala, FL; five grandchildren, Heather Klisures, Megan Medera, Amanda, Cathey and Richard Penland; two sisters, Marian Reynolds of Swannanoa and Pat Reese of Asheville; a brother, Gary "Pete" Penland of Asheville. A Funeral service will be held 3:00 P.M. Sunday in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian on Long Shoals Road with the Rev. Dr. James Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Penland Family Cemetery in south Asheville. The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 3:00 P.M. Sunday prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Arden First Baptist Church, 3839 Sweeten Creek Road, Arden, NC 28704 or to Mountain Area Hospice, P.O. Box 25338 Asheville, NC 28813.

  9. My condolences go out to the Penland family over the loss of Richard. To his children and grandchildren let me say you have lost the father and grandfather but you have not lost the heritage. It will become more important to you with each passing day. Richard was the first driver I hired in a 38 year career. He set the standard I looked for in the hundreds I hired after him. There are many stories that could be shared with you in his early days at Carolina.The point here he was truly the best of the best.
