William J. “Bill” Christopher, 71, of 2 Slosman Dr., Asheville, died Wednesday, June 20, 2007, at the John F. Keever Hospice Solace Center.
A native of Buncombe Co., Mr. Christopher was a son of the late Herbert Thomas and Virginia Dare McFarland Christopher. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Romano Christopher, who died in 1987.
He was a member of the JCs, the Kiwanis Club, the Reynolds Booster Club, the Haw Creek Volunteer Fire Dept., the Asheville-Buncombe Co. Arrow Modelers, the National Printing Association, the First Board for Hospice, the Catamount Club of WCU, was a former board member of Asheville Catholic Community School, and was a director of Shindig on the Green. He had retired from Gilbert Printing after 27 years. He also worked at Blue Ridge Printing for 4 years, and at Memorial Campus Mission Hospitals. He was a member of Snow Hill United Methodist Church.
A devoted husband and loving father, Mr. Christopher is survived by his wife, Charline Kelly Tipton Christopher; daughter, Maria Maynor and husband Jeff, of Asheville; son, Paul Christopher and wife Annette, of Arden; step-daughters, Tammy Harmon and husband Ronnie, of Candler, and Toyna Treadway and husband Randy, of Paintsville, KY; sister, Susie Christopher, of Roanoke, VA; and eight grandchildren, Joseph Christopher, Rachael and Ryan Maynor, Brandon Harmon, Lauren Harmon, Ashley Harmon, and Tyler and Jake Treadway.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. John D. Thompson officiating. Interment will follow at Green Hills Cemetery.
His family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Janet Wofford, Jeremy Morgan, Kenneth Banks, John Lackey, III, Walter Ingle, and Fred Lyda. Honorary pallbearers will be the security staff of Memorial Campus Mission Hospital, and Tony Candler, Ralph Gentry, and Kenny Thorpe.

Its with sadness that we read of the death of Bill. He was a good guy. His sense of humor was wonderful. We can see his smile now. Our recollections of Bill and the family go back to the days of East Asheville Youth Activities. Those days are gone, but not the memories. Thanks Bill, you will be missed tremendously!

I will be at the funeral on Friday. I enjoyed Bill so much as we talked in the ED. He loved home, hard work, and the people around him. We shared about the Christmas tree farm and the changes that come with life. He always let me know he was OK…David Blackmon, Chaplain

As a volunteer at Mission, I chatted with Bill every week for seven years. I heard about you and your substituting and the trips you took to your get-away.
He was such a brave, courageous man. He loved you so much. You were brave with him.

I worked with Bill for the past 12 years at the hospital. We have shared good times and bad with all the many patients and traumas that came in our doors from day to day. Bill was a great friend and co-worker. I loved hearing stories about dance competitons and the vacations that you both had a chance to take together and the love for his children and grandchildren. I know you are greiving right now, but please remember all the good times that you shared and know that he has touched so many lives while he was here with us. I know he is trying out his wings now in heaven and he continues to watch over each of you. I also want to say that I was proud to be one of his pallbearers. It made me feel good to do one last thing for him and to make sure that his journey home was a safe one. Charlene, please let me know if I can do anything for you and your family.
