Candler ~ Joan Sherlin Shepherd, 75 of Candler, died on Wednesday, November 14, 2007. She was a native of Buncombe County and was the daughter of the late Pitt Sherlin and Addie Dale Branks. She was preceded in death by her former husband and friend, Joe Blair Shepherd, Jr.; two sisters, Irene Sherlin and Edith Hipps and one brother, Carroll Sherlin. She was a member of the Oakley Freewill Baptist Church. She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Williams and husband Jeff of Candler; three sons, Charles Shepherd and wife Kaye of Spartanburg, SC, James Shepherd and wife Debbie of Mars Hill and Larry Shepherd and wife Laura of Leicester; two sisters, Betty Dyer and Grace Sams both of Arden; eight grandchildren and Ten great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held 2:00 P.M. Friday at Lewis Memorial Park with the Rev. Leonard Curtshall and Rev. Charles English officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7:00 – 8:30 P.M. in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian on Long Shoals Road. At other times, the family will be at the home of the daughter Patricia Williams.
