Johnny Dexter Lanning, 50, of 135 E Lookout Rd., Asheville, died Monday, March 10, 2008, at Memorial Campus Mission Hospitals. A native of Buncombe Co., Mr. Lanning was a son of Walter Dexter and Betty Alice Griffin Lanning. Mr. Lanning had worked as a ceiling mechanic. Mr. Lanning is survived by his wife, Darlene Johnson Lanning; daughters, Vanessa Lanning, and Melissa Shepherd and husband Dennis; son, Johnny Lanning; sister, Diane Borkowski and husband Stan; grandchildren, Kristin and Josh Shepherd, and Gloria and Anthony Gomez, Jr.; and nephews, Adam, Dakota, Dillon, and Dalton. A funeral service for Mr. Lanning will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Davis Chapel in Madison Co. with the Revs. Larry Sprouse and Dennis Shepherd officiating. Burial will follow in J. Lee Henderson Cemetery. His family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. and at other times will be at the home.
