Leonard Charles Penland, 77, of 8 Front St., Woodfin, died on Friday, August 15, 2008, at the John F. Keever Hospice Solace Center.
A native of Yancey Co., Mr. Penland was a son of the late Bascomb and Pansy Shepard Penland. He was also preceded in death by a son, Randy Penland. Mr. Penland had retired as a truck driver for Citizens Oil Co. He loved Braves baseball, was an avid fisherman and hunter, and loved to fix cars. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Penland thanked God for his loving and caring family. He is survived by his wife, Barbara "Ellen" Penland; daughters, Kathy Haney and husband Jack, of Leicester, Linda Franklin and husband Rev. William Franklin, of Burnsville; Diane Collins and husband Gary, of Swannanoa, and Penny Stollery, and husband John, of Black Mountain; son, Michael Penland and wife Sheila, of Greeneville, TN; sister, Kathleen Holcomb, of Jamestown, PA; 12 grandchildren, and soon-to-be 14 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service for Mr. Penland will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Groce Funeral Home chapel on Patton Ave. with the Rev. William Franklin officiating. Interment will follow at the Western Carolina State Veteran's Cemetery with military honors performed by the Buncombe Co. Veteran's Council. Serving as pallbearers will be Jeff and Scot Haney, Billy and Eric Franklin, Daniel Jenkins, and David Stollery.
His family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

I did not know Mr. Penland. We all have relatives that we never get to know for one reason or another. I think Leonard might have been my Dad’s cousin. His name was Grover Penland. His parents were Lila Shepard Penland and Reggie Penland. My dad has been dead for 6 yrs. and my My Mom (Mary Ellen Bridges Penland) has been dead for 20 yrs. I lost my husband in July of 08 to a undetectable brain tumor.We were married 33yrs. I am so sorry for the pain you all are going through.God bless you all.
