He is also survived by a special dear friend, Gayle Curtis of Black Mountain, NC.
Bob Patterson played and enjoyed sports. He played a major role in baseball and was a 3 year starting pitcher for Harding High School in Charlotte. He played basketball for YMCA and was a starter for the team that played Durham for the North Carolina YMCA State Championship in 1944. He was an avid golfer who played the game just to prove he could play.
In 1950 Bob enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He served 4 years and two of those years were with the 20th Air Force, 19th Bombardment Wing. He spent two years in the Korean War and received the rank of Staff Sergeant in two and a half years, receiving an honorable discharge in 1954.
Bob graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1957 with a B.S. degree in Business Administration. Some years later he would be elected to the Alumni Board of Directors at the University of North Carolina, serving for eight years. He was also elected president of the UNC Alumni Association for Buncombe, Henderson, Haywood and Transylvania counties in the late 80's.
In 1957, he began working for Sinclair Oil Corp. as a salesman. He left in 1968 as Regional Manager for wholesale sales for North and South Carolina. He then went to work for Pennwalt Chemical Company in Philadelphia, PA. He was in charge of the state of Tennessee for Industrial Chemical Sales.
In 1970 he acquired Rankin Oil Company, which became Rankin-Patterson Oil Company. Over the next ten years he acquired 16 more oil companies. He remained in the oil business for the remainder of his life. In 1980 he was elected as Marketer of the Year for the southern region of Exxon Corp. In 1975 he served for eight years on the Board of Trustees of Montreat-Anderson College, Montreat, NC and in 1985 he was elected to serve four years on the Board of Advisors at Mars Hill College, Mars Hill, NC.
Bob's strong belief in education led him to establish an educational foundation for the children of his employees. This foundation was started in 1974 and twelve young people were able to go to the school of their choice with his assistance.
He was a founding member of the Council of Independent Business Owners Inc. and in 2008 Bob was awarded the position of Lifetime Member of the Council of Independent Business Owners. This was the highest award of this kind by any business owner since this council was formed.
Bob has been very active in church, serving as deacon and elder at the First Presbyterian Church in Asheville. In the last several years he was a member of the Pinecrest Presbyterian Church in Hendersonville, NC.
Bob Patterson loved life, he loved people in general but a child is what could lift his heart more than anything in this world. He always had a smile on his face and a good word for everyone that he came into contact with. His presence was contagious and the people who were lucky enough to be touched by his presence were blessed. He will truly be missed by all.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Monday at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian. Entombment will follow in Shepherd Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 pm, Monday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Four Seasons Hospice, 581 South Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731.
Family and friends of Bob, he will be missed and he truly was a special person.
I am so sorry. Mr.Patterson was always nice to my family during years I worked for him and especially my grandson Connor. The citgo paddle car he gave him we still have wraped up. You are in our prayers
We are in Chicago until Monday evening and were so saddened this morning to learn of Bob’s passing. Over the last couple of years, we have really enjoyed getting to know him as a friend of Gigi’s from Lake Pointe Landing as well as a patient in Pete’s dental office. He was always such a kind and gracious southern gentleman to our entire family. Unfortunately we will not be able to attend his service on Monday since we will be in flight returning to Hendersonville. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
My thoughts and prayers are with the family in this time of sorrow. I worked for Mr Patterson and he was always kind to me.
Bill and I last saw my cousin Robert Patterson 1n 1999 at Mack Patterson’s home in Charlotte, NC. It was the occasion of my mother’s 90th Birthday.
It was wonderful seeing him and his charming daughters. I’m sorry we didn’t have more opportunities to visit over the years. I do have fond memories of growing up with all the Pattersons in North Carolina.
We are proud of Robert’s life of service to his family and his community. Bill and Sandra Garman
Robert is the fourth death in our nine-Patterson generation. A one-word description might be extraordinary. Certainly, the brightest star in the Patterson crown !
Bob was a dear friend and helped so many people including me. We will never forget him and our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
My thoughts are with you all as I remember the many many memories that we enjoyed together. I am currently traveling outside of the US and won’t be home in time to attend the service, but please know that you are in my thoughts.

Fran & Jan, my sincere condolences to you and your families on the loss of your father. I cherish my friendship with your dad over these past 35 years and hold many great memories from painting gas stations with Jimmy to the visits to your home (when we are all a bit younger) through our lunches over the past few years and my last phone call a couple of weeks ago. Sorry I could not be there with you today. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
It was an honor to know and work with Mr. Patterson. I will always admire him as a good businessman and a good man. My condolences and prayers go out for his family. We will all miss him.
I have fond memories of the Tom Patterson men all of them so nice and handsome….so sorry I could not have seen more of Robert over the years. God bless
Mr. Patterson was always supportive of families and friends. My mom worked for him for 17 years, and was truly blessed to have worked for him. He was always inquisitive about how her children and family were doing and loved to be informed of everyone’s achievements, etc. He was a great person, and will be missed.
Mary and I shared many enjoyable times with Bob and Mary’s mother, Lucille Beaupre. We went out for dinner every month or so and had Bob to the Cliffs at Glassy for special occasions.
Bob was a very special person. We always looked forward to spending time with him.
We will certainly miss this wonderful and interesting man.

Dear Fran and Jan,
I am so sorry to hear of your father’s passing and even more sorry that I wasn’t able to come today. I would have loved to see you both. I have many fond memories of your mom and dad. I loved coming to your house back when we were growing up. Both your mom and dad were so fun to be around and always made me feel welcome. I know you will miss him. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I would love for you to email me back if you can. With much love, Linda Aiken McCarson
Fran & Jan,
I was so sorry to hear about your dad’s passing. I always thought the world of he and your mom. They were both so upbeat and could light up a room with their smiles. You are both reflections of them and I know your father was so proud of you and your children. He lead such a tremendous life of hard work and gave so much of himself to others. What a tremendous legacy to leave his grandchildren. Robert Patterson will be sorely missed, but his memory will live on…
Hugs and love to you and your families. You are all in our prayers.
Jan and Fran, I was unable to attend your Dad’s service but please know that I send my thoughts and prayers for you all. He was truly a special person…..
Jan,
I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your dear father. I only met him one time but I remember him being a warm, and kind gentleman. I lost my father a few years ago and I still miss him very much. Your father reminded me much of him. A fine gentleman that gave his children an unshakable sense of self that will get them through the rough patches, no matter how difficult things may become. I know you will cherish your memories of your father. I would love to be there to give you a gentle hug but know I am thinking of you. Your friend, Bill
