David Kenneth Hamlin, 73, of Asheville, died Thursday, September 17, 2009, at his residence. Born on December 26, 1935 in Madison County, Mr. Hamlin was a son of the late Floyd Glen and Vada Fender Hamlin and was also preceded in death by brothers, James, Gerald and Dennis Hamlin and a sister, Ruth Christopher. Mr. Hamlin lived in Buncombe County since he was eight years old and was a graduate of Sand Hill High School. He was a US Army veteran and retired from Enka. A self-employed electrical contractor, he was active with youth leagues in the community. Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Carol Garren Hamlin; children, Sherry Shook (Roger), Kenneth Hamlin and Kelley Hamlin; four grandchildren, April Parr, Adam Hamlin (Ashley), Anna Farmer (Nathan), Jonathan Hamlin (Karri); three great-grandchildren, Grace, Josie and Colton Farmer; sisters, Iva McKinney, Margaret Frizzell and Faye Hamlin; brothers, Aaron, F. Glen Jr, Eddie and Bill Hamlin. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Monday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Reverend James Hutchinson officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with Kenny, Kelley, Adam, John, Kevin and Danny Hamlin serving as pall bearers. Military rites will be performed by the Buncombe County Veterans Council. His family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm Sunday at the funeral home.   1. All of us here at Rusty’s have a great friend, Bob Davis. He’s talked about David and we feel as though we know him. We wish we would have had the opportunity to get to know David, but he lives for us through the words and friendship of Bob. Our thoughts and prayers are with each of his family and friends. May time be a healing factor for each of you.

  5. There are no words to express the loss of someone that meant so much to so many. Praise God for his life and his impact on our family and the community in which he lived. He loved the game both on the field and in life. He taught us all how to bring out the best in ourselves. We will miss that great laugh/smile. But he left us with great memories that we will cherish forever!

I was always glad to be in David’s company and was looking forward to seeing him again before our visit was over.His dry sense of humor, a funny story or tale and before long you smiling and laughing.David’s death is a end of an era..I am thankful to have know him and I am so glad to have many great memories from years past.Rest in peace David.

    Another warrior has gone home.I have so many precious memories of Mr. David.He was my first youth leader at Deaverview Church. And an example to so many in the way he lived his life. He will be missed by everyone that his life touched.But we know today that Earth’s loss is truly heaven’s gain. If Mr. David could talk to us today I believe his message would say something like this I’ve arrived safely,I’m having a great time and I wish you were here. Love and prayers to all of you…..

  21. Thank you for your kind words and thoughts. I want to especially thank care partners and hospice for taking such great care of my father, they really looked after him like family. and thanks to everyone else for the flowers, food, cards, and especially the hugs. My dad was a great man and it sure feels good to know i’m not the only one that thought so. I love you so much, daddy, but i miss you more!
