Katherine Marian Krout Unger, 89, of Fletcher and formerly of Franklin, died Thursday, January 21, 2010 at Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals. She was preceded in death by her husband Gilbert Carleton Unger who died in 2009.
She is survived by a daughter, Kathryn Kirstein and her husband, Michael, of Fletcher and two grandchildren, Julie and Brian Kirstein.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, February 1, 2010 at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery Chapel.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to a charity of one's choice.
Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is assisting the family.
During my residency in Franklin from 1973-1987, it was my pleasure to become acquainted with Mr. and Mrs. Unger through our mutual work in the Republican Party. They were fine people and I shall remember them with great fondness. My sincere sympathy to the family.
