Portia Brown McCurry, 68, of Fletcher, formerly of Candler, died Saturday, February 27, 2010. Mrs. McCurry was born in Buncombe County and was a daughter of the late Theodore Franklin Brown, Sr., and Lula Morgan Brown. She was a former teaching assistant at Pisgah Elementary and Enka Middle Schools. She was a member of the Hendersonville Church of Christ. She is survived by her husband, Clayton C. McCurry, Jr.; two daughters, Melinda Grindstaff and her husband, Robert, of Hendersonville and Cindy Carpenter and her husband, Matthew, of Asheville; two grandchildren, Morgan Grindstaff and Lucas Carpenter; a sister, Martha Reece and her husband, Ronnie, of Weaverville; and two brothers, Theodore F. Brown, Jr., and his wife, Hilda, of Asheville and Thomas H. Brown, Sr., and his wife, Trish, of Myrtle Beach, SC. Private graveside services will be conducted by Mr. Ron Holland. In lieu of flowers, an educational fund for Morgan Grindstaff and Lucas Carpenter has been established at the Fletcher Branch of the State Employees Credit Union, 2631 Hendersonville Road, Arden, NC 28704.

  5. I’m so sorry about Portia. My mother, Willie Nesbitt, and my sister, Paula, and I lived close to her family when we were in the lower and middle grades in school and were in Johnston and Erwin schools together. When we lived close to them, we used to go back and forth across the field to visit with Peggy and Portia and my mother was a friend of Lula’s. My thoughts and prayers are with all her family.

    So sorry to hear of the loss of Portia. She was a kind lady and I remember coming to your house in younger years to eat and play Parcheesi. Those were definitely the good ole days.
    You all will be in my thoughts and prayers. Cancer is wicked and I know it will be hard for you, but God does bring you HIS Peace and you know she is in a better place.

  10. Melinda and Cindy, I am so very sorry to hear of Portia’s passing. We had so many great times together at Enka Middle School. She was so much fun to be around and made you laugh. She was so kind and such a good person and loved you two so very much. That is what I will always remember. I know how much you will miss her because I lost my mother 2 years ago and it is still hard but it will, over time, get a little easier. You will always miss her though. You are in my prayers.   26. I was so sorry to see that Portia has died. She was such a positive, pleasant person to know and work with at Enka Middles School. What a great attitude she had! I wish for her family strength and love to support each other at this challenging time.

She was the best example of a Christian I have ever known, always happy and loving no matter what she faced, even until the end of this worldly life. I’m so glad I was able to visit with her recently and we were able to say ‘I Love You’ to each other.

  34. I went to Enka Middle school and spent a good deal of time with Mrs. McCurry. I was a teacher’s assistant during my eight grade year and would spend time assisting Mrs. McCurry with various assignments that she had when I wasn’t busy. She was a truly wonderful lady and she was very kind and funny. My heart goes out to her family, I wish you peace in this hard time.

  35. I just want to let the family know what an honor and pleasure it was to know Portia. While I only knew her for a few years, we shared many laughs and good times and I will certainly remember her bright smile.
