Bertie W. Laing

Mrs. Laing was born in Andrews and was a daughter of the late Fidell and Rosetta Hyde Wiggins.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, James 'Shorty' Laing and two daughters, Mattie Sue Stills and Ella Mae Fox.

She is survived by five sons, Jim Parton of Asheville, Tommy Parton of Candler, Richard Parton of Greenville, SC, Jerry Parton of Louisville, KY, and Jimmy Parton of Brevard;  two daughters, Lucille Huffstetler of Hendersonville and Christine Sheppard of Greenville, SC.

Also raised as sons are Billy Fox of Ft. Myers, FL, Kenny Fox of Greenville, SC, and Johnny Hufstetler of Florida, and as daughters are Debra Wheeler of Powhatan, VA, Virginia Williams of Leicester, Juanita Cowart of Swannanoa, and Lynn Maher of Candler.  She also has a sister, Hattie Stewart of Andrews, 45 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and ten great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Friday at Biltmore Holiness Temple, where she was a member, with the Revs. G.A. McCurry and Ray Woodby officiating.  Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Eugene Stills, Howard Stills, Ronnie Stills, Don Stills, Billy Fox, Ronnie Graham, Donnie Harrin, and Steven Maher.

Her family will receive friends from 7 - 9 pm Thursday at Groce Funeral Hoome on Patton Avenue and at other times will be at the home of Tom and Lynn Maher, 12 Claudette Place, Candler (665-7698).
