Doris Searcy Stines, 96, died Monday, December 6, 1999, at the Givens Estates. Mrs. Stines was born in Benton, Arkansas October 21, 1903, the daughter of the late Charles and Lucy Nance Searcy.  She married Ernest Z. Stines of Asheville in 1927, and has resided here since.
Mrs. Stines attended Ouachita Baptist College on Arkadelphia, Ark. and Blue Mountain College in Blue Mountain, Miss.  She received her B.S. degree in 1925.  Upon coming to Asheville, she taught speech and drama at Biltmore High School and later at Biltmore Junior College.
She was a member of First Baptist Church for the past 71 years where she served in many capacities, including teaching Sunday school for 40 years and as WMU president. She served on the committee to restore the Dr. George Truett home in Hayesville, NC, was a member of the Asheville Garden Club and a charter member and former president of the
Asheville Lanier Club.  She was a member of the NC Chapter of P.E.O. and of the Aston Park Auxiliary.
Mrs. Stines is  survived by two sons, Dr. Jim W. Stines and his wife Joyce of Blowing Rock and Dr. E.H. Stines and his wife Libbie of Canton; a sister, Mrs. Roy Melton of Little Rock, Ark.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.


Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Wednesday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Drs. Ron Crawford and Henry Crouch officiating.  Burial will be in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory.
Her family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Endowment Fund, 5 Oak Street, Asheville, NC 28801 or to Givens Estates, 2360 Sweeten Creek Road, Asheville, NC 28803. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue is in charge of arrangements.
