JOSEPH CHARLES MEDER ASHEVILLE – Joseph Charles Meder of Asheville went to meet The Lord on September 19. He passed away at his home from a heart attack at the age of 61. Joseph Meder was born on June 15, 1949 in the San Fernando Valley of California. He graduated from Montclair High School in North Hollywood, California, and later moved with his parents Ruth and Joseph W. Meder and younger sister Mary to a small town in rural Vermont. Joe attended college at the University of Vermont and in 1969 married Susan Christine Farley. In 1974, he opened the Kettledrum restaurant in Fairlee, VT. Ever the entrepreneur, Joseph moved to Los Angeles County, California with his family in 1981 where he became a Master Carpenter and started his own business renovating homes and building detailed cabinets throughout the state. He later moved to Asheville, North Carolina to care for his ailing parents, Ruth and Joe Meder, both long-time residents of Asheville. In Asheville, Joseph began building custom homes and became an expert in home computer systems. He was an active member of the Crossroad's Assembly Church in Asheville. He was quick with a joke, generous with his time, and took great solace in prayer. He had a special love of life, his family and his church. Joseph leaves behind daughter Laura Meder Finney and son-in-law Scott Finney of Asheville; daughter Kristen Meder Spencer of Oxnard, California; 5 grandchildren Garrett, Mitchell and Russell Finney of Asheville, and Coral and Luke Spencer of Oxnard, California; former wife Susan Christine Farley of Los Angeles; sister Mary Southworth and brother-in-law Brent Southworth of Thetford, VT; and three nieces Alissa, Varina and Marlena Southworth of New England. He joins his parents Ruth Elizabeth Gehrig Meder and Joseph William Meder in God's Kingdom. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Sat. September 25, 2010 at the Crossroad Church, with Senior Pastor Michael Brown officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Crossroads Assembly Church at 20 S. Bear Creek Road, Asheville, NC 28806.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. He will always be remembered as you share the stories and the memories of how he lived his life and how very much he meant, may you find comfort…And, throughout this difficult time, may you also know the deep sympathy and concern that is felt for you and all your family. I have fought the fine fight, I have run the course to the finish, I have observed the faith.-2Timothy 4:7. As for me, I will lie down that I may sleep; I shall certainly awake, for Jehovah himself keeps supporting me. -Psalms 3:5

  2. Dear Laura and Kristen:
We are so sorry to hear of Joe’s passing. Such fond memories of that winter we spent with you in California. He and Paul enjoyed working together in the carpentry business and Joe’s political opinions were always enlightening! I know he will be missed terribly — Our best wishes to you both and your families.

  3. Scott, Laura and Family,
We just want to let you know we are here for you guys and will continue to pray for your loss. We will miss Joe deeply but rejoice in his graduation to Glory and complete healing. I always enjoyed talking to Joe and admired his knowledge of building and many other topics. We will miss him but look forward to seeing him again in the very presence of Jesus in the most incredible mansion ever built. Psalm 116:15. ‘Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.’
    Love you guys.

  4. Joe and your mom will always have a special place in our hearts. The youthful days at the KD and discussions on life are lasting memories. Gail and I share our condolences with you both.
