EDWIN “POP” McDOWELL
Edwin “Pop” McDowell, 93,
of 220 Bent Creek Road, Asheville,
died Friday, October 24, 2003, at the
Hospice Solace Center.
Mr. McDowell was born in
Brunswick County and was a son of
the late Joseph and Susie Reynolds
McDowell. He was preceded in death
by his wife Catherine Pressley
McDowell, who died in 1989, and by
four brothers and two sisters. He was
retired from American Enka and was
a member of Bent Creek Baptist
Church.
Surviving are a daughter,
Doris Case and her husband Ronald
of Asheville; a son, Larry McDowell
and his wife Lisa of Nashville, TN;
four grandsons, Ricky Case and his
wife Karen, Gary Case, Scott
McDowell, and Phil McDowell, all of
Asheville; five great-grandchildren
who were the love of his life, Ryan
and Kristen Case, Brandon and
Brooke Case, and Anna McDowell; a
daughter-in-law, Shirley M. Kinman of
Enka, and special people whom he
loved dearly, Bob and Doris Pressley
and Betty McElrath. In addition he is
survived by seven sisters, Theo Bass
of Raeford, NC, Gladys Lewis of
Winnabow, NC, Madeline Mashburn
of Leland, NC, and Vernie Gainey,
Bessie Lee Vereen, Louise Caison,
and Marie Justice, all of Bolivia, NC;
and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at
4:00 pm Monday in the Patton
Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral
Home with the Revs. Tommy Bridges
and G.H. Shope officiating. Burial will
be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
His family will receive
friends from 5:00 pm - 7:30 pm
Sunday at the funeral home and
request that memorials be made to
Mountain Area Hospice, PO Box
25338, Asheville, NC 28813, or to
Bent Creek Baptist Church, 1554 Brevard
Road, Asheville, NC 28806.
The family wishes to
express sincere appreciation to the
staffs of Asheville Health Care Center
and Mountain Area Hospice for the
care they gave to Mr. McDowell.

I can only imagine what a difficult time this is for all. I am so sorry for your loss. It is so hard to part with our loved ones when their time on earth is done. Take comfort to know he is happy now and what a homecoming he has had and the rejoicing in heaven now. Please know you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Doris and Larry, Ray and I were so sorry to hear of your father’s passing. Our thoughts are with you and your families during this sad time. We lost our Dad and our brother so we understand the sadness that you are going through. I’m not sure that you remember us, Ray went to school with Larry and Doris was in our brother’s class. (J. B.
