Catherine Edwards Austin, 83, of 41 Nebraska Avenue, Asheville, died Monday, November 13, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Austin was born in Asheville and was a daughter of the late O.O. Edwards and Minnie Hill Edwards Franklin. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clifford H. Austin, who died in 1989.

She was a member of Dix Creek United Methodist Church and was a past treasurer of the Friendship Club. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the United Transportation Union, Lodge #545 and a charter member of Alzheimer’s Association of Asheville from who she received a plaque in 1985 for outstanding family service.

In 1986 she was a nominee for Distinguished Woman of the Year and in 1987 received a certificate of Award from Governor Martin. She was honored in 1989 for the Catherine Austin Caregiver Purple Heart Award which was given each year to a deserving family member. She was instrumental in helping start the first Alzheimer’s Thrift Shop.

She is survived by two daughters, Beverly Austin of Horseshoe, NC, and Patsy Austin Mathus and her husband Hugh B. Mathus of Asheville; one granddaughter, Dawn Bishop Williams and her husband Kevin Williams of Fairview; three grandsons, Bob Behm Behm of Candler, Kenneth Behm and his wife Donna Sowers of Marion, NC, and Jim Bishop and his wife Tisa Moore Bishop of Horseshoe; six great-grandchildren, Jennifer Stines, Brandy Behm, Kevin Behm, Samantha Lance, and Tabatha and Jessica Bishop; two step-grandchildren, Terry Mathus Haynes and her husband Larry Haynes of SC, and David Mathus of Candler; four step great-grandchildren, Courtney and Ashley Mathus of Candler and Katrina and Heather Haynes of SC; and one step-sister, Reva Franklin Mathews of Newfound Round.

Graveside services will be 11:00 am Thursday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with Chaplain Jane Curran officiating.

Her family will receive friends at the cemetery immediately following the service and at other times will be at the home of her daughter, Patsy Mathus, 9 Sandhurst Drive, Asheville.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 3 Louisiana Avenue, Asheville, NC 28806, or to Mountain Area Hospice, PO Box 16, Asheville, NC 28802.
