Charles ''Charlie'' Lynn Smith

Charles “Charlie” Lynn Smith, 83, of 780 New Haw Creek Road, Asheville, died Thursday, February 21, 2002, at the VA Medical Center.
A native of Stevens County, GA, he was a son of the late William L. and Dolly Hichenbottom Smith. He was a veteran of the US Army serving during WWII, a member of the VFW Post 891 and a self employed construction worker. He was known by friends as “the Mountain Man”.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 65 years, Maude Smith; nine children and their spouses, James E. and Margie Smith of Asheville, Louise and Charles Stewart of Brevard, Calvin and Brenda Smith of Asheville, Geraldine McClure of Gastonia, Bobbie Jean and Danny Biddix of Weaverville, Carolyn and Jim Crowder of Asheville, Barbara Lawson of Hickory, Linda and Carroll Swayngim of Asheville and Connie and John Knight of Black Mountain; a sister, Margie Frye of Demarest, GA; 14 grandchildren, Davie, Lisa, Tucker, Gary, Michael, Teresa, Kim, Roger, Crystal, Jimmy, Ted, Jeff, Chris and Brad and 15 great-grandchildren, Daniel, Brittany, Savannah, Zack, Lacee, Chelsea, Arianna, Justin, Jessica, Colby, Chris, Cody, JT, Maleek and Brandon.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Monday at Erwin Hills Baptist Church with the Reverend James Whitted officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
We have many good memories of Mr. Smith. We had not seen him in some time, but remember him as being good natured and kind. Please give our sympathies to Mrs. Smith and all the family.
