Elmer, born in Burnsville, NC on May 12, 1932, soon was moved to Buncombe County where he lived most of his life.
He loved his Lord Jesus Christ, lifting weights and pitching horseshoes as much as pulling jokes on and having fun with his family.
Being the oldest son, he gave up finishing school to go to work. That did not stop him from getting his GED at the age of 52 and having his picture taken in cap and gown.
Earlier in their lives together, he and wife Toni moved to Long Beach, California where he worked at Boeing Aeronotics. He also worked as an electrician for many years and later in life retired from The Biltmore House and Gardens as Security personal. At age seventeen, he worked on clearing the right-of-way for Chimney Rock Park for Carolina Power and Light Company.
A graveside service will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery off, Merchant Street, in the Oakley community, at 2:00 pm on Thursday, November 3, 2011.
Groce Funeral Home, Tunnel Road, is serving the Moss family.
Uncle Elmer will be greatly missed, I will always remember his laugh and how he loved to pull one over on someone. And how my dad still laughs everytime he tells about when Elmer had the mumps and dad sent him a gift basket of pickles, lemons, vinegar and anything sour he could get a hold of. My heart is breaking, but I know that he is finally home and the separation is only temporary. My prayers are with you David, Terry, Steve and family.

I am so very sorry about Uncle Elmer, but I know we will see him again. I bet he is already pitching horseshoes with daddy, Uncle Don and BJ. I won’t be able to see you while you are here. I am in rehab for the next 6 weeks after surgery to repair my broken foot.I love y’all and wish I could be with you. My thoughts and prayers will be lifting everyone up. Love, Lynn
I will miss you Uncle Elmer! I have nothing but fond memories of you. I can still see you and my Papaw, Don, and my Dad pitching horseshoes at family picnics. In fact I would almost bet that 3 of you have already struck up a game or two of horseshoes in heaven. Your laugh was contagious and I hope I never forget how it sounded. I will miss you until we see each other again. To your children, grandchildren, and all that loved you I will be praying that God’s peace surrounds you and that you hold on to the wonderful memories you have. Love you all!
I am so sorry to hear about Uncle Elmer. He truly was such a jokester! He scared the dickens out of me many times, but I know it was done only in love. I loved him very much and will really miss him. Knowing he has been reunited with Mamaw, Toni and other family members makes his passing a little easier to accept. I pray that God will comfort you and give you peace and strength to get through this very sad time. I love you and will be praying for each of you. Wish I could be with you there in Asheville. Please know you are in my thoughts and in my heart. I love you! Becky
so very sorry to hear of Elmer,s passing. It has been a while since I have seen or talked to any one in my Dad,s family. My Mother Hazel sends her best wishes to the family. My Mom is not able to attend, due to her health problems. Please know we are thinking about you and remembering you in our prayers.
Sincerely,Susan Swann Rogers (Family of Bill and Hazel Swann)
I have nothing but fond memories of Uncle Elmer and all the jokes he pulled on all of us. He was a wonderful brother and uncle. His laughter, like my dad’s, would fill a room. Always looked forward to the family reunions and/or picnics because I knew that a game of horseshoes would be had and the fun would be begin. I remember at one of the get togethers Elmer chasing Jackie for throwing water on him with Dad and Uncle Horace laughing and egging it on. We will miss him but it won’t be long until we’re all reunited. I know Heaven is rolling with laughter now that Uncle Elmer is there with all that have gone before him. To Steve, Terri and David…please know that we love you and hold you in our hearts, thoughts and prayers.
Love always,
Janie and Aunt Ivanell
