Asheville – Alice Lois Weaver, 90, of Asheville and Greensboro, died Sunday, December 2, 2007.
A native of Buncombe County, Miss Weaver was the daughter of the late Wayne B. and Lucille Shope Weaver. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Wayne B. Weaver, Jr. and two sisters, Miss Lorene Weaver and Mrs. Horace P. Hughey, Jr.
Miss Weaver, a 1934 graduate of Asheville High School, worked for seven years in the office of Three Mountaineers before joining the Air and Airways Communications System. She served this government agency in Asheville, at Langley Field and in Washington, DC. She later transferred to the Greensboro, NC office of the Internal Revenue Service. She retired with 30 years of service in 1976 and returned to Asheville in 1985.
In Greensboro, she was a charter member of the Wesleyan Service Guild and served as Chairman of the Western NC Conference on Social Action for four years. She served as a volunteer for ten years with the Greensboro Urban Ministry. In Asheville, she was a member of Skyland United Methodist Church and served as a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and the Alzheimer’s Association.
She is survived by four nephews, Wayne B. Weaver, III of Cleveland, NC, Donald R. Weaver of Charlotte, Patrick M. Hughey-Commers of Staunton, VA and Michael W. Hughey of Asheville; four grand nephews and three grand nieces.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 PM Sunday, December 9, 2007 in the Rising Classroom “Old Chapel” in Asbury Hall at Givens Estates.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that memorial donations be made to the H. Lucille Shope Weaver Scholarship Fund at Warren Wilson College, Swannanoa, NC or to Mountain Area Hospice, PO 25338, Asheville, NC 28813.
