Barbara B. Parker, age 81, passed away peacefully at her home on September 1, 2016, having lived bravely for the past two years with cancer. Barbara, "BB" retired from the Buncombe County Health Department after many years of service, where she worked in the Child Health Program department. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl L. Parker, and her daughter, Kelley McGuinn King, of Asheville, and her brother, Steve Shytle of Fletcher. She is survived by her brothers, Jim Shytle, and wife Linda of Jesup GA, Eddie Poteat, and wife Mary, of Lenoir, NC, and her sister, Joy Hemphill and husband David, of Fletcher; Her son, Michael Joseph McGuinn of Seattle, WA, her step-children, Mary Jo McGuinn Osterhout and husband Michael, of Lake Lure, NC, Lynn Parker Black and husband Ron, of Oak Ridge, NC, Stephen L. Parker and wife Linda of Asheville, NC; and grandchildren, Tracy McGuinn-Messer, Sarah McGuinn-Ingles, Justin McGuinn, and Ryan McGuinn of Seattle, Bryan King, of South Carolina, Taft Ballard, of Gastonia, NC, Ashley Black- Gaylord and husband Kevin, of Fletcher, and Christopher Black, Oak Ridge, NC. BB enjoyed life, especially shopping and traveling. She was a member of Biltmore Baptist Church, and found much joy and comfort from her church Sunday-School friends and the loving community of faith and fellowship she discovered there. The family will receive friends of Barbara for viewing and visitation from 1PM to 2 PM on Wednesday, September 7th, 2016 at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian on Long Shoals Road. The funeral service will commence at 2 pm at the funeral home. Following the chapel service, friends are invited to join the procession to Calvary Episcopal Churchyard to participate in a graveside farewell. Any memorial gifts in honor of Barbara are requested to be sent to: St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, at stjude.org.
