Brittney Lee Ramey, 16, of 32 Tipperary Drive, Asheville, died on Friday, April 10, 2009, at her home.
An Asheville native, Brittney was the daughter of Gary G. and Sonya L. Ramey. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Clara Ann Retter.
Brittney volunteered at the Asheville Human Society Animal Shelter, and loved animals and children, often coming to the defense of those in need. Always an adventurous spirit, she thoroughly enjoyed the response of those who heard about the many times she canoed with alligators, or when she swam with the sharks in 2008. When folks gently asked, "don't you mean dolphins, honey," her reply, with a smile, was, "nah, I already did that."
Brittney had a fine sense of color and style. As the MERRF (Myclonic Epilepsy with Ragged Red Fibers) took away her ability to do for herself, she often was left with the colliding color choices of others. She never complained about those color choices or her declining physical abilities.
Brittney was a student at West Buncombe Elementary, Clyde A. Erwin Middle School, and Clyde A. Erwin High School, where many students, staff, and faculty encouraged her zest for life.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her twin sister, Taylor Marie Ramey; grandparents, Jane Bak, of Asheville, and Norman Retter and wife Andrea, of Port Charlotte, FL; aunt, Mary Kah and husband Steven, of Grayslake, IL; uncles, Norman Retter, Jr., and wife Judy, of Blissfield, MI, and Paul Bak, of Asheville; and special friends, Kim Smith and Darlene Colclasure.
A memorial service for Brittney will be at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 22, 2009 in the Clyde A. Erwin High School Theater with the Rev. Dr. Buddy Corbin, CarePartners Hospice chaplain, officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Asheville Humane Society, 72 Lee's Creek Rd., Asheville, NC 28806, to Mountin' Hopes Therapeutic Riding Center, P.O. Box 387, Mars Hill, NC 28754, or to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Although i dont know the family I was very sorry to read your daughter; Brittney fell asleep in death. It’s hard to lose a love one in death especially at such a young age. So it will be particularly hard for you dear mother and difficult for the bereaved father as well. Don’t be afraid to cry shedding tears of grief appears to be a necessary part of the healing process. You may find that for a time your emotions will be somewhat unpredictable tears may flow without much advance warning be patient with yourself. When we lose someone we love the loss seems too great to bear. However Jesus gave his own perfect life as the basis for removing from mankind the curse of imperfection, sickness and death. A comforting thought that I found in the bible says sickness will not be with us forever. The prophet Isaiah pointed forward to the time when “no resident will say: ‘I am sick.’” (Isaiah 33:24)
Brittany, we will miss you dearly. She made a big impact on our second period. I also remember her when I was in her middle school classes. I will try to help Taylor get through this at school.

I didn’t know Brittney nor do I know the family, but I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my son at the age of 26 and I know the pain of losing a child. Just know you are in my prayers and may God give you comfort through this grieving time.

Even though I did not know Brittney personally, I went to West Buncombe with her. I was a grade ahead of her. She is in a better place.
