Buford Clay Mills, Sr.

Buford Clay Mills, Sr., 93, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, October 27, 2017. He was born on September 2, 1924 to the late Henry Clay and Deanie Mills. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 72 years, Myrtle Geraldine Mehaffey Mills; oldest son, Buford C. Mills, Jr.; brothers, Bobby, Ray, and David; and sisters, Katherine and Judy. Buford was a veteran of both WWII and the Korean War, serving with combat duty in both the Army and Navy. He was fortunate enough to survive two ships sinking out from underneath him. He is survived by his son, Dennis R. Mills, of Montana; daughter, Sandra Sue Mills Saunders, of Georgia; brother, Carol Mills, of Canton; aunt, Nell Cagle, of Waynesville; a large number of nieces and nephews; three grandsons, two granddaughters, three great-grandchildren, and another on the way! Per his wishes, a graveside service will be held at Ridgeway Baptist Church, 525 Old US 19/23 Hwy., Candler NC 28715, on Sunday, October 29, at 2:00 p.m. Military honors will be performed by the North Carolina Honor Guard. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. is assisting the family.
