Caryl Trakas Scovil

Asheville – Caryl Trakas Scovil, who died on March 22, 2013, was born on June 1, 1944 in Charleston, South Carolina. She lived in both Charleston and Columbia before matriculating to the University of Virginia. There she studied business administration. Eventually, she came to Asheville with her husband Philip Bitter. Here, she put to good use her entrepreneurial skills by running three successful businesses, a fabric store, a children's clothing shop, as well as a house of interior decorating. For the latter she studied design, receiving a certificate from the American Society of Interior Designers on completion of her studies. Later, she became a florist. Eventually, she departed Asheville for Williamsburg and then Raleigh. Following the death of her husband, she began detailing homes. After meeting and marrying James Scovil, she served as the administrator of his medical practice. They both retired to the Asheville area in 2009. She is survived not only by her husband, but by her son; Paul Collins of Asheville; a sister, Tina Nickas of Columbia, S.C., another sister, Mary Elizabeth Karahalis of Baltimore, MD; two grandchildren, Paul and Eleanor Collins also of Asheville, and a cousin, Nicholas Blanos of Liburn, GA. A memorial service will be held for Caryl at 5:00 pm, Friday, March 29, 2013 at Groce Funeral Home on Long Shoals Road. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that contributions be made to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 5000 Lead Mine Road, Raleigh, NC 27612.
