Charles D. Stevens, 88, of Asheville, passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2017, at the VA Hospice. Born in Hot Springs to the late George W. and Dorothy Lamb Stevens, he was a graduate of Biltmore High School and retired from the Engineering Department of the VA Hospital as an electrician. He also worked with Haynes/Lunsford Electric Company for sixteen years. A veteran of the US Army, he served in the 45th Infantry in Korea. He was a member of Lodge 238 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, a member of the American Legion Post 70, and VFW Leicester Post 891. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Peggy Bryant Stevens; son, Charles M. Stevens of Fort Lauderdale, FL; daughter, Karen S. Roche of Nokomis, FL; and six grandchildren. A funeral will be held Monday at 1:00 p.m. at Groce Funeral Home on Tunnel Road. Rev. James R. Lamb will officiate and burial will follow in the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.   1. Our prayers are with all the family. Charles was a special uncle. Always there when we needed him with a smile. I’m sure Granny had him a cup of coffee and a piece of coconut cake ready for his arrival home. Rest in peace!

  2. Charles always found the time to come by and check on daddy and now they are keeping check on us.He loved his family and his friends. You are a special husband, father, grandpa, and uncle we will see each other again.

  3. So sad to say goodbye to family – Charles was my uncle.. I remember telling my teacher in grade school that he was my older brother – it seemed good to have an older brother. I was always fond of him – will never forget the day my folks and I moved away from Madison County – still remember seeing Granny and Charles standing on the porch, waving until I could see them no more – tears on both sides. My deepest condolences to Peggy, Ann and Mike and grandchildren. May God give you sweet comfort!
