Charles Ormond Radford, Sr.

charles radford, sr.
Charles Ormond Radford, Sr., of Asheville, passed away peacefully on March 9th at the age of 80 while playing his last earthly round of golf with the "dawn patrol" and then woke up to the glory of heaven. He loved greeting friends and newcomers with a hug on Sunday mornings at Covenant Community Church where he was a long time member. His volunteer work with A.C. Reynolds' High School Booster Club was legendary in both his time and effort, so much so that the stadium concession stand was recently named for him. He was an avid golfer often shooting his age in recent years. But his greatest passion was his family, in particular his grandchildren where he exemplified love, kindness and responsibility for others. He was a man that "took care" of things and people. Charles was born to Grace and Elmon Radford on September 21, 1935, in Greene County, NC. He retired from DuPont in Kinston after more than 30 years of service and moved to Asheville to help in the care of his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by both his parents. Left to carry on his memory and legacy are his wife of fifty-five years, Patricia, his son Charles O. Radford Jr. (Chuck) and wife Tracy; grandson Charles O. Radford III (Cort) and wife Casey and granddaughter Rachel Radford; great granddaughter Anna Radford; sister Wanda Honeycutt and special grandchildren Mimi, Jake (Karlee) and Nick Hill. A service celebrating the life of Charles O. Radford, Sr., will be held at Covenant Community Church on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Covenant Community, 11 Rocket Drive, Asheville, NC 28803, or A.C. Reynolds' Booster Club, 1 Rocket Dr, Asheville, NC 28803. This wonderful man will be greatly missed. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. is assisting the family.

  1. It was my honor and blessing to have Charles as my brother-in-law. Charles was always kind, pleasant, loving, and caring to me and our family. We would talk Carolina UNC Tar Heels sports when we were together and even a little golf, even though I don’t play the game.I am so happy that Charles played the game that brought him so much pleasure and joy.

I remember, as a youngster, Charles passing a football around with me in our backyard in Erwin, NC and I also remember visiting with Charles and Pat while spending some time during the summer in Kinston, NC with my sister Teenie.

I look forward to seeing Charles again, on that great Reunion Day.

I love you and will miss you brother-in-law.
