Charley B. Justice, Jr. (80), of 189 Dogwood Rd., in Candler, passed away January 14, 2013, due to complications with Parkinson's Disease of 22 years and pneumonia. He was born in the upper Spring Creek community of Madison County in 1933 and had resided in Buncombe County since 1960. He graduated with honors from Western Carolina University with a degree in chemistry, and he retired as a research chemist with American Enka/BASF after 37 years of service. He was the son of late Breckenridge and Leona Webb Justice. He was preceded in death by a sister, Sara Plemmons, and four brothers, William, C.J., Ray, and Dean. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Peggy Plemmons Justice; his daughter Susan Ballard and the sunshine of his life, grandson Holden Ballard, both of Weaverville; sister Dortha Smith of Hazelwood; brothers James (Wanda) of Brevard, Edward (Eleanor) of Waynesville; sisters-in-law Mary, Polly, Diane, and Linda; and all of his nieces and nephews who had a special place in his heart. He served as past President of the Candler Lions Club, of which he was recently honored as a lifetime member. He was known for his love of collecting antique hand tools, making pine knot and sassafras "critters", and wrote four books of poems and short-stories relating to his time at Spring Creek. He also square danced with the Pisgah View Ranch Cloggers for 15 years. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday in the Patton Ave. chapel of Groce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Howard Moore, Jr., officiating. Burial will be private. His family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, and also from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Thursday, prior to the service.   1. Peggy, Susan, Holden…
    I was sadden to hear of Charley’s passing. He was a great friend and I enjoyed the talks we had. I had the pleasure of helping him compile the 4 books he wrote to honor his family. He really wanted to do this so his beloved grandson, Holden, would always remember how it was when and where his Grandpa grew up. I’ll always remember the laughs we had as we were working on the books.

  5. Peggy, I still cherish the ‘horse/rider’ pine knot art piece I purchased from Charlie when he and B. C. were both going for radiation treatments at Mission Hospital in the fall of 2005. I am pleased to have this piece or art for rememrance of Charlie and the mountains of NC.

  13. I was so shocked to see my precious patient in the paper this morning. I will miss seeing him every 6 months and enjoying his stories and just spending time with him. Peggy I will be thinking of you and your family. It makes me smile though to know he is loving the new body and mind he has in heaven and watching over us. Especially his grandson whom he talked about all the time.

    I would also like to send thoughts and prayers from everyone at Biltmore Dental Group. He was a wonderful patient and joy to have in our practice.

  26. It was my privilege to work with this marvelous man from the 60s when I joined him at American Enka until his retirement. I admired his intellect and marveled at his courtesy over those many years. However, I had not been aware of his status as poet and author and would be pleased to learn more about his Spring Creek stories.
