Christine Plemmons Matthews

christine matthews
Christine "Chris" Plemmons Matthews, a lifelong Asheville resident, passed away peacefully at her home on April 4, 2017. Cheerful, outgoing, and courageous, Chris was a beloved and loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend. She added warmth to the lives of all who knew her. Born on Christmas Day in 1922, Chris was the seventh of eight children born to Laxton Mallie and Minnie Elizabeth Donaldson Plemmons. She attended Asheville public schools and, briefly, Mars Hill College. In 1942, she married Jack Butler Matthews, Jr., also of Asheville. In the 1970s, she began working at Matthews Ford as the first female sales person in the region. She quickly proved that a woman could indeed sell cars. During her sales career at Matthews, she won numerous achievement awards. She retired in 1987. Chris was a shining example for her family. She is survived by her daughter, Jacqueline K., of Asheville; son, Ross and wife Kathleen and children, Daniel and Meagan, of Salt Lake City, Utah; grandson, Warren Gentry and son, Gunnar, of Glenwood Springs, Colorado; granddaughter, Katharine Davis and husband Mark and daughter Emily, of Carlisle, Pennsylvania; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband and by her daughter, Trina Matthews Mullen. The family is especially grateful to Roberta Pearcy, Rika Jeter, Cookie Morgan, and Sandy Jones, devoted care givers who provided superb care for Chris during the final years of her life. Chris was a longtime member of the Asheville First Baptist Church and the Dorcas Bible Study Sunday School class. Following her 2010 move to Givens Estates, she attended services in the Givens Chapel. A graveside service for Chris will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 15, at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory, 901 Aiken Road, Asheville. A memorial service will follow at 1:00 p.m. in the Givens Estates Chapel, which is located on the second floor of Asbury Commons. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018, or http://www.pdf.org
