Coleman Herman Buckner, 82, of New Leicester Hwy, died Monday, July 15, 2013. A native of Madison Co., he was a son of the late Herman and Mary Walker Buckner. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Doris Teague Buckner, son, Coleman Richard "Rickey" Buckner, granddaughter, Laura Buckner, and sister Bow Messer. Mr. Buckner moved to Leicester in 1952, where he established Buckner's Dairy Farm. He received several awards for his dairy farming through the years. He was Outstanding Young Farmer and one of the Outstanding Young Men of America. He also served on the board of ASCS and Farm Credit. He was a founding member, former assistant chief, and former Fireman of the Year of the Leicester Volunteer Fire Department for 10 years. He was also a member Leicester United Methodist Church. Mr. Buckner is survived by his daughters Anne Buckner (Bobby) and Debbie Patton and husband Ronald; daughter-in-law Janice Buckner; grandchildren Christy Reeves (Dwayne), Julie Shaw (Leon), Jeffrey Buckner, Jodi Marlor (Steven), Butch Patton (Amanda), and Jason Patton (Celeste); 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Beatrice Buckner. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in the Patton Ave. chapel of Groce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ray Hipps officiating. Interment will follow at Newfound Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Everette Ponder, Ronnie Patton, Butch Patton, Jeffery Buckner, Steven Marlor, and Bobby Clayborn. His family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, and at other times at his home. The family expresses special thanks to Dr. Virgil Thrash, Dr. Michael Unks, Dr. Mark Groh, and lifelong friends Wendell Brown, Everette Ponder, Bob Long, and Dan Sluder. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Newfound Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Marie Roberts, 1147 Old Leicester Hwy, Asheville, NC 28806.

  1. Such a lovely man. I’ve known him all my life, but really got to know him well the last couple of years. I will miss him very much at family get togethers, and that precious big smile that he had for everyone. To all the family I ask the Lord to place His loving arms around each and every one of you giving you peace and comfort during you time of loss and sorrow.

  9. Debbie and Anne, I want to let you both know how much I have always loved your dad. He was one of those people when we were growing up that I will always remember. In later years when I saw him, he always knew me and told me he loved me. He, Glenn Rogers and My uncle, Woodrow Sharpe are all together and reliving old Fire Dept Days and hanging out down at Woodrow’s store. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire family.

  13. So sorry about the loss of your father and grandfather. He was very kind to us and rescued us during the blizzard of ’93 by pulling us out of a snow drift so we could get back home. Our prayers are with all of you.
