Derrick LaQuinn Lee, Jr., passed away Sunday, July 1, 2018, at the age of 12. He was born April 22, 2006. His parents are Niesha Mitchell and Derrick Lee, Sr. He was raised by his grandparents, Rev. and Mrs. Eddie Tolbert. He attended Koontz Elementary School and he would have been a student at Valley Springs in the fall of 2018.
Derrick was an active member of WNC Baptist Church, pastored by Dr. Rev. L.C. Ray. He participated in all youth activities of the church, Praise Dance Ministry, Choir, a Youth Usher, Sunday School and a faithful member of One Youth At A Time. He was being taught to operate the sound system. He would do anything for the Pastor and Church Members as a whole. He was an avid football fan and he played youth football for a year.
Left to cherish his memories are sisters: Aaliyah Tolbert, Alexius Tolbert, Kataria Waters, Lideria Lee and Darecka Lee, all of Asheville; brothers, Darius Tolbert and Kaui Credle; grandparents, Patricia Lee Wadsworth and Freddie Wadsworth of Asheville; grandparents, Willie C. and Marie Mitchell of Orlando, Florida; a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, family members and friends.
The funeral service for young Mr. Derrick, Jr. will be held Saturday, July 7, 2018 at 1:00 pm at WNC Baptist Church, 240 Haywood Street (Downtown). Rev. Eddie Tolbert and Dr. L. C. Ray will officiate.
Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is assisting the family and the memorial register is available at grocefuneralhome.com.

I did not know Derrick but I am drawn to this amazing young man and his obvious love for life. I will keep everyone who knew him in my prayers.
Our community lost someone who would have made a very positive impact for years to come.
So sorry for your loss. He was a really special kid with a big heart! My son Tayshon loved him dearly as will as I. May God bless your family. My prayers go out to you all. I pray God gives you peace in this situation.

I was one of Derrick’s first grade teachers. He was unforgettable in many ways and his big, bright smile always made my day (and his hugs too). What a precious young man, who I will miss so much! Unfortunately I will not be able to attend his service, but my heart will be there. Thanks for touching my life, Derrick. Ms. Lawing loved you.

My deepest condolence to the family.. I will miss Derrick running up amd down the street, playing with hos brother and sisters in Woodbridge. He was a sweet young man. May God give you comfort during this time.

I did not know Derrick but he sounds like a great kid who loved the Lord and who was loved by many people on this earth. I believe he is with his Lord and savior, Jesus Christ. Take comfort that you will see Derrick again if you will accept the promise of eternal life by believing that Jesus is the son of God and that He died and rose again to forgive your sins past, present and future. May God wrap His arms around you and pour out His love on you during your time of grieving.
I can only imagine what heaven looks like, but I know one day I will see you there. I know that you are smiling down on us with that beautiful smile. I am at peace and I have no worries because I know that our heavenly father is taking care of you. I love you nephew!

I don’t know this young man or his family. Such a tragic loss. I am praying for the family, and the justice be served so that this young man may rest in peace. Prayers going up for the family.

Phillipians 4:6-7 admonishes us to throw our anxieties on our Heavenly Father Jehovah, he in turn will strengthen you and place peace upon your mind and heart. I hope you all are able to find comfort and heal very soon.
i remember when derrick would chase me home everyday and me and him would also play with each other i can truly say that i miss him and he was like a brother to me and you will forever be in my heart i hope the lord be with all of his family love you baby boy- person you liked in kindergarten
I was going through some old pictures and I came across me and Derrick, It’s been two year’s and it still doesn’t feel the same. Derrick will always be in my heart and in my prayers.
