Donald "Big Don" Whitener

Donald P. "Big Don" Whitener passed away May 9, 2015 at Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, N.C. He was a lifelong resident of Leicester, NC. Big Don was a national guardsman, cattleman, builder, and a true steward of the land. Born on March 11, 1945 he was the son of the late Odell and Fina Jones Whitener and the brother of the late Robert F. Whitener. He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Frank and Vienna Jones, and his aunt, Blanche Jones, who were his mentors and people he loved dearly. He is survived by his daughter, Aimee Whitener Pope and sons, Jeremy (wife Karey), and Matthew (wife Candice); grandchildren Sarah, Kiley, Korey, Kevin, and Cameron; sisters Marie Whitener and Mary Whitener Bryson (husband Tom) ; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; extended family Ginger Hicks, Dr. Harold Goforth, Vera Robinson; and his lifetime friend and business partner Bob Long. Many friends are left to cherish his memory. A "Celebration of Big Don's Life" will be held at the Icenhower's cabin located 151 Icenhower Rd. Leicester, NC on May 16, 2015 at 4:00 PM. Please bring a chair, a covered dish and memories to share. The Family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the staff of Elizabeth House for their care and support during Donald's stay.
