Donald Thomas Deitz

Donald Thomas Deitz, 71, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at his home in Fletcher on October 21st.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy and Robert Yoder of Asheville.

Don was a very hardworking man who enjoyed the simple things in life. After graduating from Carlisle Military Academy in South Carolina in 1973, he immediately began his lifelong career in the Federal Government by serving in the Army for three years. He then worked for the National Climatic Data Center at the Federal Building in Asheville for seven years before transferring to the United States Postal Service in 1983. Don was an integral part of the GMF on Brevard Road until his retirement in June 2022. He truly loved his job as expeditor and everyone he worked with knew they could always count on “Deitz” to get the mail where it needed to go.

As proud as he was of his 50 years of service in the Federal Government, it didn’t come close to the pride he felt for his family. No man could ever love his family more deeply and unconditionally than he did.

Don was completely devoted to his wife of almost 45 years, Martha McMinn Deitz and always strived to be the best Daddy possible to their daughter, Jennifer Deitz Miller. And when his little girl grew up and married Daniel Paul Miller of Hendersonville, he loved him like a son and absolutely adored their fur babies, Bella, Molly, and Allie- three toy poodles who always greeted their Grandaddy with endless kisses. There is no doubt that Allie was waiting to greet him in heaven with her tail wagging faster than the speed of light.

Don will be greatly missed by his family who were so proud of him and loved him so very much. They will honor him by cherishing all of the little moments they shared over the years. And the love, it will remain forever, unaffected by the restraints of time, undefined by life or death, quietly evolving into a constant peace with a strength that can never be broken.

A private service will be held at Calvary Episcopal Church Cemetery.

Donations in Don’s memory can be made to the Fletcher Fire & Rescue Department. His family greatly appreciated their fast response and kindness.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I enjoyed working with Don at the Postal Processing Plant on Brevard Road for several years. My prayers are with the family.

  2. I worked with Don at the Postal Service..He was a dedicated worker. I have a fond memory of Don and his daughter. My wife and I saw them at the theater several years ago…His daughter had a little friend with her..They were about 8 years old. All three of them had large tubs of popcorn and a super size cola..I thought “Don really knows how to treat a lady”. Prayers for his family.

  3. Always there and always dependable. He was a great person to work with and a dedicated Union member to the APWU. Heard many stories about his daughter growing up and how he loved her.
