Born in: Plymouth, NC
Resided in: Asheville, NC

Doris “Dotty” Whitlock passed away on Saturday, August 15, 2020, at Givens Estates. She was born on November 29, 1938, in Eastern NC to the late Doris and Leland Thompson. She grew up in Plymouth, NC, where she enjoyed swimming in the Albermarle Sound and learning to play the piano. She graduated from Salem College in 1961 with a degree in math and worked for the Social Security Administration for a time prior to marrying a United Methodist minister with a tendency to move every few years. Dotty and her husband, Dwight Whitlock, raised three children and served churches in Central and Western NC for 37 years.

Due to her candor and gregarious good nature, no one ever accused Dotty Whitlock of being timid or dull. She enjoyed singing in choirs, traveling, and laughing with her family and friends. She and Dwight retired to the Asheville area where they were active members of Trinity United Methodist Church. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Cathy (Brenda), Frank (Pam), Tim (Krista), and six grandchildren. She also maintained countless friendships from across the years and the state. Her mischievous humor and joyous spirit will be sorely missed by her family and friends.

A private memorial service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church. For those who wish to watch live via the church’s Facebook account, they may do so at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 22.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 587 Haywood Rd. Asheville, NC 28806, or to Givens Estates Assistance Ministries, 2360 Sweeten Creek Rd. Asheville, NC 28803.
