Arden – Dr. JoAnn Carland awakened from this dream of life on Thursday, August 15, 2013.
She left her close family yet dreaming, husband Jim, sons, Trey and Jason, Trey's wife Shelby and their daughter, Izabella, and Jason's partner, Judy Rogers and her children, Katelyn and Kade. Her other family had awakened before her, brother Bill, father Howard, mother Louise, and granddaughter Stella Grace.
There will be a great celebration of her life on September 8th at 2:00 PM at the Double Tree Hotel in Asheville. More information is displayed on a tribute page on www.CarlandFoundation.org. Please visit that website because it not only displays the information about the Celebration, it provides a link for people to share their stories. The details of her life, her accomplishments, her contributions to the world, the legacy that she leaves, is all far too vast for this small metier. Some of those details are inscribed on the website, but the bulk of the story must wait until the Celebration. If you knew and loved her, please visit that site and share your story of JoAnn with us. Please do not send flowers. If you wish to make a memorial, there is a scholarship fund available at the Carland Foundation, and you may reach it through the website.
Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is assisting the family.
I new from knowing her in the 60’s she would go on to make her mark in life. She had a great Mom and Dad and brother.
I am so sorry for your loss. ‘If a man die, shall he live again?’ asked Job a long time ago. Perhaps you, too, wondered about this. Well the Bible makes the promise: ‘Your dead ones will live…they will rise up’ Isaiah 26:19. And the Bible also says: the righteous ones will reside forever upon the earth. So yes, soon you may be reunited with your loved one again, possible right here on earth. Please find comfort from these facts during your time of need. Please visit http://www.jw.org
To love as you have loved, and to be loved as you have been loved, gives meaning to this dream we call life.
Jim, Trey–I was shocked and saddened to learn of JoAnn’s passing. She and you Jim were so kind to me when I first got into teaching at Western. I never saw her without a smile on her face! She was always encouraging me and helping me with both teaching and research. I will truly miss her!
Jim,
We were blessed to call JoAnn and you as well our friends. God bless you and your sons. This world is a far worse place without her presence.

My deep sympathy to Jim Carland and the entire family for the passing on of JoAnn. We will all miss her. May God grant her eternal rest.
I was saddened to hear of the loss of such a wonderful person. She was one of the best Professors I had in my MBA program at Western. She and her husband Jim made the class an experience to enjoy. She is truly a loss to the ones left here.
We are so sorry for your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.
