Edwin R. "Eddie" Johnson, 75, of Lee's Creek Rd., died Thursday, February 23, 2012, at St. Joseph's Hospital. A native of Ashe Co., he was a son of the late Walter and Annie McNeil Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a Veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps., and was classified as a sharp shooter. He owned and operated several service stations in West Asheville. He was also a member of the Moose Club. Mr. Johnson is survived by daughters, Jerrie Hightower (Alex), Tracy Johnson (Robert Carroll), and Liz Crowe (Rex); son Terry M. Johnson (Michelle); the mother of his children Mary Johnson Martin; long-time companion Frances Norton and her sons Ervin and Jeremy Moore, and her grandson Isaiah Moore; grandchildren Justin, Christopher, and Stacey Hightower, Jessica and Jake Crowe, and Travis and Candis Carroll; great-grandchildren Madison and Macey Hightower; and brother R. Leslie Johnson (Robin). A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday in the Patton Ave. chapel of Groce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Brent Norris officiating. His family will receive friends following the service. Interment will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday at the Western Carolina State Veteran's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lewis Rathbun Center, 121 Sherwood Rd., Asheville, NC 28803, and/or to the Mission Hospital Vascular CCU Unit, 509 Biltmore Ave., Asheville, NC 28803.

    I MET EDDIE IN 1968, I WORKED AT HAPPY HILL AS A DISHWASHER..WALKED IN FRONT OF HIS SERVICE STATION 3-4 TIMES A DAY. DIDN’T SPEAK MUCH ENGLISH AND EDDIE FIXED MY 1ST CAR
    AND HE DID’T CHARGE ME ANYTHING, HE TOOK CARE OF ME.
    HE WAS A VERY QUIET , CARING, AN ALL AROUND GOOD MAN TO EVERYONE. I ALWAYS REMEMBER EDDIE.. HE WAS ‘THE REAL THING’ HE WILL TRULY BE MISSED BY ALL THAT MET/KNEW HIM. I ALWAYS LOOKED UP TO HIM..AT 15 YRS OLD HE MADE A GOOD IMPRESSION ON ME; HE WAS LIKE FAMILY TO ME.

  15. I worked at First Citizens in West Asheville for several years and Mr. Johnson was one of my favorite customers in the drive-thru…he always had a smile and a joke for me. He was a great man and he’ll be missed.
