Roy Elden Duncan, 83, of Arden went home to be with the Lord on February 9, 2021. Born in Burnsville, NC on February 28, 1937 he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth Ann Duncan, parents William and Zettie Duncan of Burnsville, NC and a brother John Duncan of Brevard, NC.

He was a wonderful husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather, father-in-law and friend. He is lovingly remembered by his 4 children and their spouses: Vikki Duncan Bailey (Mike), Gaye Duncan Walker (Bob), Ray Elden Duncan (Karen) and Veneshia Duncan Ridout (Glen); 8 grandchildren; Jonathan and Timothy Bailey (Claire), Graham Duncan (Vanessa), Duncan Walker and Jennings, Lucy, Charlie and Willow Ridout; 3 great grandchildren, Ella Bailey, Oliver and Beatrix Bailey as well as several nieces and nephews. Elden was a graduate of Clearmont High School, Class of 1955. He retired from a lifetime career in retail sales in 1999 with the last 38 years at Sears, Roebuck and Co. He was a member of Arden First Baptist Church since 1957 where he served in many roles throughout the years.

He was a humble, quiet man of few words but loved to tell a joke or play a trick on his children, grandchildren or great grandchildren every chance he got. He was also the person you wanted around if anything needed to be fixed or repaired rather than replaced. He was a lover of home and family.

A private family service is being planned.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I am so sorry to hear of Elden’s passing. I remember Elden from his long service at Sears in the Men’s Department and later in Applicances. Elden was a jokester and always had a story to tell. Elden was a good and kind person. May Elden rest in eternal peace.

  2. Vikki, Gaye, Ray and Veneshia, I was very surprised when seeing my cousin, Elden’s obituary this morning. It is such a shame that we loose touch with those we grew up, laughed, mourned and loved with for many years. You were blessed to be raised in a wonderful home with loving parents who were proud and supportive of their children.
Elden was a good man who lived his faith and love for his Lord. Our daddy, Enzy and Elden shared lots of laughs when together and laughter would spread throughout the family as they shared their jokes and Readers Digest stories. Elden’s death makes me grieve this morning for so many loved ones that we miss their sweet presence here with us. My prayers are with you throughout this time and may your memories always be sweet ones that bring a smile and warm your heart.
    Love you

  3. Dear Duncan Family,

I’m so sorry for your loss of Elden. I will keep you in my prayers. Please know that we grieve with you.

    Clairene

  4. I had the privilege of working with Elden for many years at Sears. He was always an encourager and an honest man of great integrity. He and Elizabeth were the perfect couple. Elden was the ideal employee: dependable, honest, cheerful, humble but able to lead and train others. He’s probably telling St. Peter a joke at this very minute. He will be sorely missed by many.

  5. So sorry for your loss. Elden was a special person. He is one of those people you never forget. He was always very helpful to us in many ways.

  6. We are so saddened to hear of Elden’s passing. He always made us laugh with his wonderful jokes! Please know that we continue to lift you all in our prayers. Heaven has another angel. May God give you peace and comfort you during this very difficult time. We love you all.

  7. A lot can be said about my father but 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 from the New Testament sums up it well.
11 and make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: you should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you
12 so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders ( unbelievers) and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.
Thank you Dad for the great example you have been to us.
Love you and see you and Mom before long.
    Ray

  8. Eldon and my daddy were cousins. I always enjoyed seeing him and your mom at the Honeycutt Decoration. If our family made a trip to Sears, we made a point to go look for Eldon. He was such a sweet, kind soul and was glad to see kin folk. Family, may you be comforted by sweet memories of your dad and granddad.

  9. Veneshia and family,
I am sorry about the passing of sweet Elden. Your parents were both wonderful people. I wish you all peace and comfort. 💕

  10. Dear Vickie, Gaye, Ray, and Veneshia, I was very saddened to receive a message this morning that my cousin Elden had passed away earlier in the week. Another light in the Letterman family has been extinguished, and he will be missed (especially his jokes– sometimes corny and sometimes just plain funny). In very recent years we had lost touch, and I would be remiss if I did not say that I am sorry about that. Life and distance got in the way, unfortunately. But I have many fond memories of him with us at decorations and family gatherings. I do want each of you to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers as you navigate these coming difficult days.

  11. Duncan Family. I was so sorry to hear of your loss. My cousin Elden was such a sweet, lovely man and I know how much you will miss him. My Daddy, Enzy Letterman and Elden were very much alike. They were quiet, but humorous. I always looked forward to seeing him and your Mother at our Letterman reunions. He was quick with a joke and often got more laughs from them than those he told them to. We always got a chance to see him at Sears when we shopped in Asheville and it was a treat for us and for him. Wishing you all wonderful memories.

  12. The happy memories of our days at Clearmont School are cherished. I will always remember his kindness. Prayers for comfort for you now and in the days ahead.

  13. Some lost a father, some lost a brother, some lost an uncle, and some lost a friend. Elden was all of these things and more. May the Lord comfort us all in this difficult time.
