Mrs. Ammons was born in Buncombe County to the late Marion and Margaret Smathers Poor. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Hardie William Ammons, Jr. and a sister, Dottie Clark.
Eleanor was primarily a stay-at-home wife and mother. Over the years she spent time as a substitute teacher, kindergarten aid, bank teller, delivered flowers for Poor’s and Gudger’s flower shops, worked at A&P Grocery and was an administrative assistant at Ammons Office Supply. However, her greatest joy was raising her boys and helping anyone in need at any moment, being the hands and feet of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Eleanor will be laid to rest by her husband at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain.
