Elizabeth Ann (Becker) "Betty" Rohde, 79, passed away Sunday, June 21, 2015, at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock. She was born on September 15, 1935 in Iron Ridge, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roland and Frances (Stommel) Becker; her sisters, Corinne, Marie and Joyce; and their husbands, Gene Schaefer, Don Hammer, and Dick Ptaschinski. She is survived by her devoted husband of 56 years, Floyd Rohde; sons Paul, Douglas (Sylvia Bachmann); and James (Vicki); grandchildren Breanna, Logan and Parker; and brother Gregory (Elaine). Betty graduated from Beaver Dam (Wisconsin) high school and earned a teaching certificate from UW-Whitewater. Later, with three boys under the age of 10, she completed her Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education at Edgewood College in Madison. She taught for 37 years, over 20 in Sun Prairie, where she and Floyd raised their family. In her spare time, she loved reading, gardening, sewing, and cooking. In her retirement, she tutored children and adults in reading. Mass of Christian Burial will be 12:30 p.m. Friday, St. Barnabas Catholic Church. The family will receive friends immediately following. Interment will be at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Henderson County Public Library, (828) 697-4725. Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is assisting the family.

  1. Dear Floyd and family, we are so sorry. Betty was a extra sweet and kind lady. No matter what her worries were, she always was concerned about others and was a very prayerful person. She will be missed by many, many people.

  3. Doug, thanks for sharing the obit with us. I think I would have enjoyed your mother as a friend if I had met her. Beaver Dam: I had a college roommate from Horicon, WI. I think the family shopped in Beaver Dam! Thinking of you and your family with love.

    My sincere sympathies to you all. Betty was a wonderful teacher at Royal Oaks in Sun Prairie and certainly a example of what one would aspire to become as an educator. I’m so thankful to have had the years at RO with her. May God’s Grace give you the comfort and healing that you need. Betty will be another of Heaven’s angels.

    I watched Betty as a model teacher at Eastside Elementary school,in Sun Prairie, as I was a teacher’s aide,in 1972-1974. I decided to finish my elementary teaching degree with encouragement from Betty,Dorothy Klink,Mary Taylor,and others. So glad I did.I was hired as an elementary school teacher in Sun Prairie, and taught for 34 years. Betty was very knowledgeable, personable, and fun to be around.She did make a difference in so many lives. I am thinking of you during this difficult time. Respectfully, Eileen Peters.

  7. It was such a privilege and honor to serve with Betty on the staff at the Royal Oaks Elementary School in Sun Prairie for many years. She was a wonderful teacher and model professional, with the highest of standards–all appreciated by students, parents, and colleagues alike. She will be greatly missed but always remembered for all she gave to so many.
