Elizabeth (Beth) Law Askew, 75, died peacefully Tuesday, September 2, 2025 at Stone Creek Health and Rehab. Beth was born in Louisville, KY to the late William and Laura (Aycock) Askew. She was also preceded in death by her husband, David A. McCaleb. She grew up, principally, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
Beth worked in Birmingham as an architect for several firms during the course of her professional life. She and her late husband met in architectural school at Auburn University. She was also a graduate of the University of Alabama and served as a teacher before entering architectural school. Beth and David enjoyed the challenge of restoring a historical home in South Birmingham. She was also talented as an artist in different mediums, which was an ongoing hobby of hers.
Beth, a devoted daughter, moved to Asheville later life to help care for her parents before their deaths. After retiring from Lowe’s in Asheville as a cabinet designer, she became involved in the community at Deerwood in South Asheville. She was a lover of nature and hiking, enjoying the trails at the Asheville Arboretum and the Biltmore Estate.
She is survived by her three siblings; Anne A. Burns, William Arnold Askew (Mary Finnell) and Stephen H. Askew (Patricia Tanzer Askew), as well as several nieces and nephews.
A small Celebration of Life will be held for family and close friends on Saturday, September 6th. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution in her memory to a charity of your choice.
